What have you found to get a better reaction, Kennedy card in box or card in wallet?

I've done card in the wallet (sealed envelope) and folded card to ringbox and I think the reaction is stronger with the box because it has been present from the beginning of the routine and it has been in full view. That is how I felt the first time I saw it performed and I believe it's the same for audiences.
But both are very strong. |

I have gotten a much bigger reaction from a wallet. Mostly because it is an everyday object and is unexpected at the start. Christopher was right, both are very strong and can play well if you know how to handle it.

Card in wallet is a lot easier to do. I have the Kennedy box, but have yet to try it.

It is not about the box, wallet, shoe, envelope with nail, mouth, etc. A routine like this one is contingent on the presentation plain and simple. But I like and perform wallet - more relational and practical.

I believe that both effects are strong. I don't have a kennedy box but a magician friend of mine does and he gets very good reactions from it.
I perform Darwin Ortiz's 'Pick Up on South Street' (card in wallet effect) from his book Cardshark. With this effect, the wallet is held by a spectator before a card is selected. This I find plays very strong in a walkabout or table hopping situation. Michael J |

I used to perform Card In Can regularly - from a set of John Kennedy notes. I mostly perform CTW. Both are very strong! I think it boils down to whether you have the pocket space or not.

Both play very well...but trying to determine which one is stronger is like trying to figure out which tastes better. Coke or Pepsi? I prefer Coke, but Pepsi tastes good too! Christopher

I agree with Christopher...but that being said, I use my wallet everyday and carry it with me, so being lazy I prefer the wallet because it is one less thing to carry. I think the effect for laymen is basically the same.

I like John Allen's Destination Box. The spectator holds the box from the very beginning, and the spectator gets to remove their signed card. People just cannot fathom how it could be possible.

I've used both the Kennedy Box and Mullica wallet. Before either one I used Clipped by Sankey and carried only a paper clip. It's a good one too. For me, the Kennedy Box has become more of a trick to perform in a parlor setting or when I am at least working from a case. I like them both a lot, it is just a matter of pocket management and bulging pockets.

I've always gotten better reactions from card to box (I don't use Kennedy's) because it fits in my routine better. Whichever one fits your routine best is the one you will feel more confident about. Because you will be confident, your showmanship will be even better and your audience will be able to tell.
Its not the place that matters, its your ability to sell it to your audience through the performance. As far as pocket space goes, I LOVE card to wallet. But, I think someone like Tommy Wonder would agree, don't sacrifice the effect just because your pocket space improves (although I'm sure he would have found a way to achieve both). Whichever one fits your routine best is the best one to use. |

Great thoughts all around. I use the Tommy Wonder Ring Box now and it's very small, which makes it easier to carry in the coat pocket.

I recently did an experiment at a strolling gig I have every Wednesday night.
For some I did the card to box (Kennedy) and others I did card to wallet(Mullica). While the wallet got good reactions the box got amazing reactions. I think the fact that the box is in full view the whole time and it contains their signed card folded up is the reason it's so strong. |

I recently published "The Wooden Card Box" in The Wizards' Journal #19 on my site. It uses a wooden card box by Ginny: http://www.giftsbyginny.com/boxplayingcards.htm
One of the effects used with the Card Box (there are many uses for it in various other routines) is the Tommy Wonder Ambitious Card trick. Here are some of the advantages: The card box is in play from the start. You open the box (which can be nicely engraved and personalized just for you by Ginny) and remove a deck of playing cards. The box is seen empty at that point. That's Advantage #1- carrying the cards in a card box is more natural than introducing a ring box, and being able to show the box empty at the start is Advantage #2. You close the empty wooden card box and push it off to the side. As in the Tommy Wonder finale to his ambitious card routine, the signed card vanishes from the deck and you point to the card box. A spectator can open it and discover the folded card within. You dump out the folded card into the spectator's hands and they open it to reveal the signed chosen card. Advantage #3 is that the larger size of the card box means the card only has to be folded twice, as in the Mercury Card trick. At the end, you put the deck of cards back into the box and you are ready to perform the trick again immediately...Advantage #4. Disadvantage #1 -you must already know the Tommy Wonder Ambitious Card routine to use his moves- but that's not too bad because you can always get his DVD and learn them (highly recommended). You can also use ANY Ambitious Card routine and still use the folded card in the box ending which is actually the (public domain) Mercury Trick with a Card Box. So that's not a really bad disadvantage. Disadvantage #2- the Wooden Card Box is not something you can carry in your pocket. It needs a bag or pouch for transport.

Quote: I have gotten stronger reactions to the Kennedy box. There seems to be such an anticipation as to what is in it, and the spectators are so sure you have not done anything sneaky with it, that the reveal seems impossible. Card to wallet is nice and avoids any props, if you use the wallet as your standard wallet.

I really like Jamy Ian Swiss's version of card to "box". He gives some good reasons for doing this version over card to wallet and he has really made the trick his own.
