How does one go about getting a stage show in a theater?
Do you four wall? Are you hired? What advice can you give other performers who may wish to do the same. |

I have only been hired to work at a public theater venue twice.
As in no agent involved and open to the public. The last time was in Charleston SC, and the theater belonged to a company that ran ghost tours. They thought it would be a good was to increase revenue and possibly promote both the theater and their ghost trade. I was recommend for the position by Mick Ayres, who was contacted by another performer who was a magician. It is the show that Raymond Hill, made his theatrical debut. Of course corporate theater work and work for all level of schools comes down to having an agent or the connections to acquire or be recommended for said work. But I am sure most performers realize that. Possibly some information about my new project might be of value. It will be self financed. (It is an odd sort of concept that I think might be hard to book without proof of concept). I am considering linking with a charity for one show in the venue. By doing so you leverage allot of PR power. PR can be expensive and interviews and articles are always better than display advertising. The target size is no more than 100 people. Am considering advertising in movie theaters. The spots will look like one of the previews for an upcoming release. Sorry I could not be of more help but it really comes down to what type of show your doing and finding the correct place to do it. Best Wishes, Jim

Movie theatre advertising is an untapped resource. People get there early and are pummeled with a ton of adverts.

Movie advertising is old. I did a 1000 seater which was also a cinema. And they offered to put up an ad between films. I didn't do it. Here is the basics of theatre publicity for those that aren't big names.
First of you must get the right venue. It has to have the right foot flow. My cinema had 7000 attendees everyweek was bang in centre of town right in the middle of large university population. Next you must get your timing right. No point putting on shows if the students are doing exams! Put them on when they are fresh in town with money in their pocket. Halloween was always sell outs! Get your branding right. As a hypnotist you need striking posters because your gonna put them everywhere possible for at least six weeks prior to the show. Ad in press every week sustained poster campaign in centre and outskirts of city. If you do not have tv exposure yu must build your brand this way. People must see your posters at least five or six times in diferent parts of the city. Here is another BIG tip. Finda theatre that is experiencing some pain. My original cinema I noticed had stopped doing late night shows. After investigating I found out the manager had mismanaged the place and had failed at the late shows. He was about to lose his job. Me coming along saved his job we sold out the place 12 weeks in a row. But he was willing to do anything to make it work More recently I played a major venue after 12 years away. It also had a problem. It had lost its late night license to run as a night club but could open for shows. They paid for everything during the edinburgh festival. And were talking about putting the show on national tour. However I broke one of my rules TIMING. All students are away during the festival and there is far too much competition. We averaged 300 a night instead of the required 600 a night so they dropped it. Shame because I am sure on halloween we would have sold out 4 shows easily. That is in a nutshell how to do theatres. If you can find pain they will do anything for you! People make the mistake of trying to get into really successful theatres. I look for when things are going wrong and offer them a solution. But you must have all the criteria above in place for it to work. By the way October seemsto be a hot month here for everybody. Thhe festival is over new students in town. The locals are back from holiday. Its dark not much competition and xmas is still months away. Timing is everything as is location. |

I don't know but I would say the same principles apply.
Right venue right footflow right time of year for your intended audience. Multiple exposures to your message. One street can have 100,000 exposures to your poster in one week in centre of town. So put up posters in 30 streets. Ask local shops if you can put one in the window. I was looking at a theatre for this month. Another great deal because they have some pain. I worked out I only had to sell 200 seats to break even 500 seats would give me 3k and a sellout of 1200 would give me 10k sterling! This means I could easily give away 200 tickets to shops in the high streets and all over to put my posters up and I would have 800 seats left to sell. Its all about timing venue and exposures to your posters. I don't see how that is different? But maybe I am wrong. |

Plus just email them once you have a target venue tell them you want to do your show there and could you meet. You might be surprised whats on offer especially if they are struggling just now. Costs nothing to go talk to them.
I find that's the hardest part actually going to see them. Because it is a daunting prospect for sure. But once your in there looking at the venue working out the specifics and seeing the possibilities it starts to gather its own momentum. As jackie Chan once said JUST DO IT! Actually I don't think its that different according to an old book by Robert Nelson on publicity for the mentalist that's what he did. And that was in the States. Also you might find you have access to their mailing lists and all sorts of social media they have developed that will do a lot of the work for you for free! |
