I also found fireballs to be underwhelming, especially compared to good clubs.

I've played around with contact juggling the renegade fire balls. They get a good reaction for the most part, the problem I experiance most is that in Alaska during the summer months it stays light out until after 11pm, and during the winter months it's often too cold to perform outdoors, and the flame from the balls is just too small to show up well in the daytime.
fireperformer911, I think the reason torches gets a better reaction is partly due to the fact that you can get a much larger flame while still being reletively safe for the performer, clubs have a more dynamic flight path in the air, and the general public instantly recognizes the truth that juggling torches is harder than juggling balls. Though mostly I think it's the old 'Big fire = big reaction' formula. As far as whether everything cool has already been done, I think that new items of manipulation or juggling only catch on strong when you have someone that's creative enough to utilize a new concept in a way that redefines that concept, or where the concept is accessible to others. With Michael Moschen of his many unique creations contact juggling has caught on the most because (while difficult) it caught people's imagination and was easy to grasp the possibilities. Many people have copied his ideas with integrating bounce juggling with geometric shapes because they look at it and say, "Hey I could do that." But you notice that the stuff that's a bit more esoteric, that requires a wider range of skills; mime, dance etc. those don't catch on. (We would all like to think that it's due to people not wanting to copy a performance, but let's be realistic for every person that has the intergrity to refrain from copying another's act, there are a dozen that would if they could) I say this not to criticize your opinion, which is entirely valid, but to only point out my opinion on the subject, mainly because I feel strongly that saying "There is nothing new under the sun" is a self-limiting statement that doesn't give enough credit to human creativity, and often discourages people from seeking new ideas.

I heard from a friend that anecdotal evidence is actually quite reliable. |

First let me say that I agree in part with your statement "There is nothing new under the sun is self limiting " I do a straitjacket escape on tall unicycle when I first did it I had never heard of anyone doing it. After I was doing it for awhile I heard of others that had done it before me. So I am always seeking new ideas. Still am but the more I try to find new things to do the more I find someone had done it before. I did not juggle renegade fire balls or that type I juggled balls that were on fire flame was as big or slightly smaller than juggling torches. I burned my hands learning so it was more hazardous to my hands but still not as impressive as juggling torches. I think everyone should strive to do something new and different but not to live in denial that it may have been done before. |

How did the flames get to be that size?
Just curious.... |

The balls were basically a hacky sack soaked in fuel. Warning hacky sack has to be modified if you use a regular hacky sack you will end up with a melted pile of plastic that will burn your hands. I can't tip modification as it was told to me by another performer in confidence.

I know different fuels differ, was mostly just surprised because balls tend to have low surface area, which means generally smaller flames.
fireperformer: From what I have come across, you can use a number of fireproof fillings, such as smallish stones. |

They make Hacky Sacs with metal fillings, but it sounds like bad dangerous idea.

It should be ok, provided none of it is on the surface. The only burns I have gotten from poi were due to hot metal, not the kevlar.
Still sounds like a bad idea though.... |
