Mr. Angel reminds me of a guy in the music industry named Mr. Gorelick.
Mr. Gorelick played jazz, and while people thought he had some talent, he was just a run-of-the-mill, ordinary saxophone player. He tried to really get people's attention playing the classics, like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, etc., but they just weren't "feelin' him" at all. He decided to make syrupy, Easy Listening music, and became a multi-millionaire. First name is Kenny. Kenny G. Criss reminds me of Kenny. Let Criss do Criss. Quote:

Kind of funny that Fox jumped into it like that. The comments posted below the video seem to reveal that most people don't really care.

[\quote] I agree, and I second the comment. I am a huge fan of jazz, including Kenny G, but especially old-school, smooth jazz, classics, etc. One of my stage acts was all done to jazz music, back when I was still doing illusion shows full time. As it has been said before, Criss Angel may break some of the "standard rules" about magic on TV but after all, he does have a TV show of his own, and has for some time now, as well as a show in Vegas. He clearly has done, and is still doing, something right. I will be the first to admit, there are a lot of things that Criss does (as it was the same with David Blaine) that were very cool and I really do (did) like them, and other things that are done purely for the TV viewers out there. I miss having shows like Worlds Greatest Magic on TV with such awesome hosts like John Ritter, and shows like Champions of Magic, etc. Those were very entertaining shows and I wish they would bring them back. |

Why are we knocking other magicians?

Criss has the lowest rated live show on the strip for a reason. People come expecting to see what they see on TV. When it cannot be done, things start to fall apart. It's a shame.
If you have ever paid attention to Criss' sleight of hand skills, he really is a talented guy. It's a bit of a paradox. Make no mistake that the lay people want to talk to me about him all the time, but many of them say things like, "the people he does his tricks for must be paid actors, that's the only thing I can come up with..." I never heard that about Copperfield. But Criss has legions of followers and I don't think this news clip is going to have any negative affect on him. As long as there are famous magicians, I have a common language with my audience, and that is always a benefit. |

His live show may be the lowest-rated live show, but he still has one, which just proves once again as I said before - he has done, and continues, to do something right, no matter what that 'something' is. But, as sleightman pointed out, people want to see what we call TV magic in a live setting and that is just not possible, especially with the style used by Criss, because of so many different factors. Thus, their high expectations are not met at the live performance and after, they have their big let-down moment. Criss and his show are not the problem here - the perception of what the audiences see on TV and their pre-existing expectations, are. If David Blaine were to have a live show on the Vegas strip, he would be running into the same exact situation. As to the statement about not having heard anything about Copperfield being accused of using paid spectators: David Copperfield has long (and repeatedly) been accused of doing that too. The reason one may not hear that about David Copperfield today is because he is not on TV regularly nowadays, nor is he the common household name the way Criss Angel currently (by comparison) is - at least where the public is concerned. |

The camera can be the prosidium (sp) arch (ie, all sorts of stuff can go on around it and behind it that the television audience would be unaware of) but it cannot be the method. Industrial Light and Magic can do that sort of thing far better than we can.

I also agree with you in that if I ever did anything on TV (I have in the past), and especially if I had my own show, the camera would NEVER be the method. I say that because personally, I believe in the purity of the art, not cheap tricks. Note, I do not accuse anyone specifically of doing it, but that is my stance on it. |

So, anybody else enjoying the self-parody commercials Criss is doing for popcorn? ("Oh. My. Gosh! He just turned the BAG...into a BOWL!")
Come on, fellas, you know how many magicians it takes to screw in a lightbulb: 500. One to put the bulb in, 499 to wail, "How come HE'S the one in the spotlight?" |

I always thought it took 10 magicians to change a light bulb;
1 to change the bulb 5 to complain about how much better the bulbs were changed "back in the day." 3 to copy the light bulb changing and put it, completely unchanged, into their act and 1 to steal the bulb changing idea and sell it as his own. Incidently, (sp) while I've never done anything specifically on television, I did do a show for the Hasbro Children's Cancer Ward Christmas Party which was recorded and used as the tag for the Channel 10 and 12 news. I had both of them on tape, but lost the tape.

That popcorn commercial is the most endearing thing Criss Angel has ever done. I really don't like most of Criss's stuff but it was wrong for the news station to do what they did.

While he does bring a lot of attention to magic, that doesn't always mean it is good attention. This is a good example of that. Makes me think of spiderman, with great power comes great responsibility...

I prefer David Blaine because he is so real but have always loved what have both done for the art of magic in general.
David Blaine is responsible for making the term "Street Magic" a household one. I had the priviledge of meeting him at one of his book signings and found him to be as sincere and humble as he appears on his television shows. He was delighted to see us performing when he arrived and even turned the crowd over to us when he departed. I believe he has some family (aunt I believe) here and visits on a regular basis. I also know he has also visited the wards where wounded warriors are kept to recover from battle at several of the military bases here WITHOUT the presence of the media which says a lot about this man. Criss Angel, whether real or completely staged, only continued to contribute to the wave of popularity that has spread across the globe. |

I am certainly not a huge Criss Angle fan. I agree with Cyberqad statement that when camera tricks start getting involved there is no more magic. Certainly not skill. I can make a motorcycle disappear in my back yard if I video... hit the pause button... wheel the motorcycle off camera.. and then hit record again.
I am glad at least for the fact that Criss has brought magic back to television regularly. IMHO Criss is definetly more of an entertainer then a performer. Look at the videos (DVD's) he has put out. He gives a little talk. Yet he can't demonstrate simple close-up or worse yet explain it. I think on all of his volumes with Johnny Thompson he did a couple of tricks, yet only explained one of them. And I thought I was watching a high school kid just starting in magic. Sure maybe harsh to say.. but OMG! The rest of the video he either had Thompson show and explain everything or someone else. (can't remember his name) I'm glad he is doing it out there. I am not going to knock that. But I can say I WISH we had someone else out there too showing some good magic. I haven't seen all his season. But I remember catching one effect and it was the MacDonald Aces set in a casino setting.. and I almost couldn't even watch it.. Personally I just thought the performance was hokey, just non-believeable, he drew it out so long trying to make it SO dramatic. Just didn't work for me. Even in his magic kits.. He is on the DVD for about 1-2 minutes.. with. "practice practice practice" and then someone else goes on to do and demonstrate everything.. and you do not see him anymore on the DVD.
