I've really wanted a walking liberty OxF set for a while, but it continues to be out of my price range (buying books really hurt this quarter). As such, I'm thinking of buying an exp ] now and then a gravity f*****r at a later date. Would it be a problem if I bought a johnson exp ] and a schoolcraft gravity f*****r?
I'm not really sure if there's a big difference in coins used (i.e. does johnson use less soft coins than schoolcraft?) and will there be an issue of the f*****r fitting with the exp ]? |

Maybe
I've noticed the Johnson silver [ is very loose. They advertise it as being universal and working with any coin, which just means a sloppy fit. That said, I don't think you'll have an issue with it getting stuck at least... Even 2 gaffs from Johnson has shown this to be true for me. Best rule of thumb would be to get both from Jamie or Todd or one of the other makers (there are others which aren't as expensive. People can weigh in with their favorites). Getting them together after explaining they need to fit will ensure you aren't disappointed. I know Todd will take measurements of items so you can order additional coins later which will work with them. I understand price is an issue though, so maybe try one of the custom workers who isn't one of the two? |

I was considering that, but the quotes from kuepers and jb are actually pretty close to the prices of schoolcraft were around the same as scoolcraft when factoring shipping. I've also heard a lot of bad things about the quality on the forum after a few searches.

Does anyone have a kuepers shell? I've read a couple of bad reviews on it, but those were from a while back. I'm hoping the quality has imrpoved.

Hey mav, you might want to wait and save up for the OxF set.
I practiced with components that were on hand, which was okay. Then I got an OxF set and there was no comparison. Eric might be able to shed some light on this, but I think the m*****ism and fit are specially balanced to facilitate the moves. The thing looks and acts like a regular coin, yet responds like a fine machine at your command. Reliability is very important, especially in the spectator's hands.

Hi Mav,
Through the years I have found that I am better off waiting for the best of what I want, rather than settling for a less expensive substitute. I know you are anxious, but I'm quite sure that in the long run you will be happier saving up and getting the OxF gaff you really want. You have a lot of life ahead of you. Be patient. Cheers, Sammy

Somehow, I was really hoping someone would honestly tell me that a kueppers shell and flipper would work almost as good as an OxF. Wishful thinking, I guess. Well then, I guess I'm saving up for the full set after all.

I'm waiting for my OXF from Schoolcraft. I have coins from Keuppers and they are good quality, IMHO. I have had both gaffers do custom work for me. Schoolcraft's work is always really excellent. My favorite gaffs are from him. He's always backed up and it takes a while, but it's worth the wait. Keuppers is faster and I don't want to say he's not great--because I can't honestly say anything bad about Keuppers. I can just say my favorite stuff is from Schoolcraft.
I'm sure if you practice and develop your routines, I imagine you could end up with something that will work well for you. I mean...great coins aren't much good in the hands of someone who hasn't developed the chops (as I've all-too often demonstrated)--I'm sure you could adapt to whatever you can afford and ultimate get an entertaining show going. I'm sure we've all been in situations where we didn't have ideal gaffs, but we make due and as long as you've put in the time I would think you could get something to work for you. |
