Google does know you -- or, rather, your website -- exists. Do a Google search for "Site: FamilyFunMagic.com" (leave out the quotation marks). But Google doesn't know what to do with it.
You need a metatag for keywords (actually key phrases, such as "yuma magician, magic shows in yuma Arizona ..."). Commas are used to separate key phrases, so don't use them within key phrases ("Yuma Arizona," not "Yuma, Arizona"). Even more important is a metatag with a description or metadescription. Often, Google takes this, or part of it, to describe your site. Something like this might work: "If you looking for a magician in Yuma, Az, Ed Millis may be the magician you're looking for. He presents family-oriented magic shows, with lots of clean comedy, and even balloon animals, in Yuma county, Arizona." Include text on your site (the body of the site) describing your show. Be sure to work in the key words into this text. Include a list of categories on your site: "Categories: Yuma magician, yuma magicians, magic shows in Yuma, family entertainment in Yuma, family magic shows in Yuma, school shows in Yuma ..." Always, in keywords, main text, etc., to include more general terms, too, such as "entertainer," "comedian," "balloon animal maker," etc., if they apply. Your next customer might not be looking specifically for a magician. List every city, town, hamlet, subdivision, etc. with your service area on your website. Anywhere that people might say they are from. Google loves links. Outgoing links, incoming links. You might want to include links to non-competing magicians on your site. Here's the HTML code for one <a href="http//:www.thomblissmagic.com">Southern California magician, clean comedian, and balloon animal-maker</a>. More important is to get people to link to your site. There are quite a number of places that will list your site for free. I can't tell you what they are here, because some of my competitors are Café members (perhaps I've already said too much), but if you PM me or send an e-mail through my site, I will clue you in to a few of them. Ed, look at the index.html in my post to see where the meta tags Thom is describing should be located in the head of your index page and how they should be set up. Thom's suggestions are good ones.

Wow!! This is indeed a bounty!
Thank you, David, for the new index page. It's on!! (I'd still like to get the original one re-done in HTML and CSS.) Mike: That's my second business-only phone. I'm planning on setting up the voice mail to give my email address and web site. So -- "sorry if I've missed you" ... Thom, Donald, Brad: Thanks for the meta tags and text help. I'm gonna check again tomorrow with you, Al, and we'll see what's going on. Cheers! Ed |

HEHE.. lookin good Ed..
ok lets hit the ground running your wanting to rank for magician yuma and or Yuma magician???? a couple of changes.. (then I will throw some Google love your way by the means of the social bookmarking and the other stuff) 1. you TITLE, think of this as your 1st line of sales copy, you have 65 characters it's currently "Yuma county Magic" that will be the Blue link in Google.. change to "Yuma Magician, Ed, is FAMILY FUN Magic" 2. the new homepage (David, good job) we need to tweak for the keyword phrase. SO you heen to get your keyword phrase into some header tags H1 , H2 easy way is to change out the red text on the page to <h1>Yuma Magician Ed Millis</h1> <h2>Family Fun Magic Like Never Before</h2> check your voicemail I left my # so feel free to call sounded like a verizon voicemail if so it's free to call me back
its ok.. balloon dogs don't bite

Perhaps I'm way off base here, but why do you have to be googlable this Saturday night? When I do a gig I talk to the interested people after my show, I offer them my business card, I tell them where I live, and how long I've been performing. I have never suggested at a show that anyone should do a google search to find me. My God after seeing your show the last thing that they need to know is if your show is suitable for their needs. The google search function is for people surfing the net that are looking for an entertainer in your area. I think that you should strive to do the best show possible, and other bookings will follow.

I think that having his website itself rank for those keywords, is much better than having a Magic Café conversation about his website show up for those keywords.
Imagine you're a potential customer. Having to wade through the Café conversation, and get distracted by the commentary here, to see and click the link to his site, is putting an extra step in the picture. They might not go to his site in the end, but go to other conversations here, because of distraction. Food for thought. - Donald

The fact that magic Café conversations are googlable is definitely not to our advantage. I belong to another private forum where people are free to say what they think openly, and the conversation is quite different there than it is here.

Yes I agree, having his own site show up is much better.
And it will in time. But for now having it here is better than having it nowhere. He wanted to be found in 48 hours. They can now find him through his profile here or from any of the links above. This thread will move down as his site moves up. The important thing is Ed can now be found. He couldn't yesterday. Tom

Ed, I would like to follow up on Mr. Angello's post.
I'm really not sure why you need to show up on Google before Saturday either. From you initial post I gather that "hundreds of families" will be there anyway. (Confidentially, at my current stage of magical development, that prospect would terrify me!) You should be ready with the business cards (complete with your url) for after the show. I would like to point out that the new index page is only a temporary measure. Your site really needs an overhaul in my opinion. Having said that though, you are to be lauded for your efforts. No kidding. You're trying hard, and it shows. May I suggest that you consider using one of the many available open source CMS programs. You can learn a bit about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_content_management_system I like one called CMS Made Simple (http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/). It is easy to set up and manage. I would be happy to help you if you find it challenging. With it, you can easily add pages, a blog, photo albums, news about your shows, and a calender of events to your site. You might also consider the popular WordPress platform. It comes in two versions. The easiest to get going with is the version hosted by WordPress.com (http://wordpress.com/). Installation and updates are handled on the back end by wordpress.com. All you have to focus on is adding content, which is a snap. The downside is that your site will be a sub-domain of wordpress.com such that the url will look something like this: familyfunmagic.wordpress.com. The other version which you must download and install on your own hosted site is available at wordpress.org (http://wordpress.org/). You must update that version yourself. The up-side is that the url for the site will, of course, be your own: familyfunmagic.com. Both versions are free. Consider this. Dump the blog page from your current site when you re-do it. Instead, get a free hosted blog from wordpress.com. Then link to your shiny new, easy to maintain wordpress blog from your familyfunmagic.com site, and vice-versa. Now you have at two sites linking to each other. Cool. Just food for thought. Gotta "disappear" now...work beckons. Bye

Do you have some sort of giveaway (activity page, colouring page, photo, postcard, etc.) with your contact info, to give away to the kids at your show this weekend? Not just for on stage volunteers, but for all. Make sure your contact info (name, phone, website) is on that page. That will help with your overall marketing (just one piece in the puzzle). - Donald

Yes, I have business cards with my URL.
Yes, I have some giveaway sheets, also with my URL. Yes, having a couple hundred people in the audience is heart-stopping! But also exhilarating!! If I want this, then this is the way forward, and panic is no excuse. Why by Saturday evening? Because I won't get to touch and talk to everyone. This is a very busy event. Not everyone who wants magic may think of it right then, or get to meet me right then. So when they get home and relax, and wonder "Who was that masked man?", and reach for Google, I'd like to be there. Yah, I saw my Café posts this morning when I searched for "yuma magician". But not my own site. Oh, well - only so much I can do right now. It's not like I'm going away after this weekend .... Ed |

Maybe worth saying, Google doesn't grab every Café post.
Only the bold worthwhile statements, much like the one I made about Ed in my first post. It stood out and contained a link to a new site. They can go directly to the site from the top of this thread, so it isn't like they have to read through the whole thing. Ed, if having Google find you on here wasn't what you wanted, or it's a bad thing, I do apologize. I was just trying to help by highlighting it. Tom

I wouldn't worry too much about it, Tom.
Because of the way that Ed's signature was before (with the raw url), and his profile name, and the info on his profile that he is in Yuma, AZ, all of that info was here before for google to find on various other threads. And on this thread, without your post. There was lots of posts on this thread using all sorts of keywords. lol! Brad also gave a link to his site, with good keywords. I have google alerts set up to track my name, and often it sends me links to Café threads. Not every thread, though, just like Tom said. - Donald

Thanks Donald.
I like the idea of blaming it on Brad. (lol) This is awful, now we have to figure out how to hide Ed... before they get a map to his house. :) Tom

Ed,
Do yourself a favor and hire someone to do your SEO. If you're serious about performing lots of gigs, and being a professional in your market, chances are, you might have more important things to do than learning how to stay on top of SEO! I know there are lots of basic things you've done (and can do!) but for less than the price of one of your shows, you could have someone do you some real good SEO, that will help you for years to come! I'm a fan of doing things yourself, but I'm also a fan of letting professionals do what they do best! In my opinion, an SEO professional will do more for your website than you could possibly do, and the time, stress, and effort you will save will be better spent on other things! There are lots of guys here on the Café who can help, or you can also go with someone local. A simple internet search will yield reviews of honest, local SEO companies there in AZ. Just my thoughts, best wishes! Kevin |

With the change to his landing page, Ed now has the words "Yuma Magician Ed Millis" on his website in at least one place. Good start!
