You want my honest opinion? Get ready for it...
I HATED IT! For several reasons...but for the obvious reason first. You put that young lady at risk when you did this. What if you were wrong. She would have paid for it. I don't find that entertaining...I find that stupid. Other people have spiked an audience member on roulette style routines in the past. NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!! I LOVE Spike Roulettes and even tho' I have spiked myself in the past, I continue to perform it b/c they are quite powerful and really do set up for a dramatic moment. However, I would NEVER put anyone in my audience at risk. I think it's a stupid idea. Also... I hate seeing Criss Angel-esque performers and you come off to me as a cheap rip-off of him. You don't look like an entertainer...you look homeless. I'm not saying that all magi should be in a suit...but there are different ways to dress to get that "edgy" look than dressing like you did. My opinion...you came off looking like a real tool. I also think the method for it is quite transparent, but maybe it's the magician in me. The audience didn't seem any the wiser so who knows? Aside from that...I thought it was great! Christopher

Hey that was harsh if constructive critisism, which I appriciate! You are partly right about the danger to the spectator. But I made this myself from scratch and it uses my own system. Also the routine which is inspired by a Eugene Burger card routine adds another layer of safety. My girlfriend at the time told the local cabaret I did magic, they gave me 2 weeks! I had done this routine before, I showed them it, they liked the version with the spec.
I am working on a version with a samurai sword with bases on the floor, I fall on the bags chosen by the spec. How's that? As for the 'look' that is not my 'look' really. I probably hate the way I look in this vid more than you do! lol But I don't see how it is Criss angelish in anyway??? I have only seen a few of his shows. But he comes off to me anyway as a rip off of Simone Drake? Being full on Gothic with 'Crow' face paint and such no? He is like Emo/Goth? Also I am being quite ummm myself which is laid back, from what I see of Criss he takes himself extreemly serious? Anyway check the attached pick for my 'look' from last years show. Or this look?
Edgy? Criss does not look 'edgy' he looks like a 43 year old guy, dressed up as a 14 year old Emo kid. You want 'edgy' check this guy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cegdR0GiJl4 Click here to view attached image. |

Ps - loved the idea if the box, a great way to reveal the trick!
Some good lines there 'tought by one handed Jack) Sounds like the audience like you! I work comedy clubs and it didn't sound like they thought you were a 'tool' Good laughter! Good effort mate! |

I thought it was great, entertaining... made me smile.... However dangerous it is for the partcipant, her reaction was what sold the trick...

As for the 'look' that is not my 'look' really. I probably hate the way I look in this vid more than you do! lol If this is not your look then why were you dressed like that? EVERY TIME you are onstage you are representing your product. Why on earth would you not put that product in the best possible light? Why would you ever do a show that's not your 'look'? I don't get it?? As for the trick, I could take or leave it. I wasn't that entertained. You lack a certain enthusiasm and a confidence. More onstage time will cure that, as well as more practice time. As you stated, you only had 2 weeks. But still that should have been plenty of time. I work TONS of burlesque shows, and I think your venue was similar. I think comedy goes a long way with those crowds. Remember that this is an escape for your audience. They get enough tension from their regular life and work. Try not to bring any more of that to them in your one act. Otherwise you are starting off with the audience against you to some degree. These kinds of effects only work when you can start off with something fun first. Keep at it. |

The audience was obviously having a GREAT TIME, including your assistant. The only rule is there are no rules.
