Apparently a lot of schools do not teach cursive anymore. For myself that just feels wrong, but aside from potentially hurting my opportunities to use handwriting analysis in the future is it actually a problem?
What do you think? It seems like a basic, fundamental skill that everyone should have; but on a practical level I guess I can't think of a real need for it.

What the heck do kids learn if they are not learning cursive? I distinctly remember learning cursive in grade school and remember screwing off in class, the nun threw a set of keys at my back. It stung so bad. I just remember thinking, "my parents will be mad if I tell them I got this welt because I didn't learn this stuff."
These kids today need Sister Mary Anne, she always said, "you're gonna walk a chalkline for me." She wasn't kidding when it came to education. HH |

Apparently they call long hand writing cursive. I didn't know that.

I learned cursive in elementary school and haven't used it since. My mom is a school district superintendent; I should ask her about this. I just found it to be slower and sloppier, and I rarely see it used.

It's a good question. It's not in schools because it isn't deemed to be important enough to spend time on. And I don't see a strong cursive lobby out there.

My biggest complaint is that no one teaches kids how to hold a pencil any more. When I went to Catholic school we learned the Palmer method, and if you deviated from that method it was a ruler across the knuckels for you. I also remember the nuns telling us to use a fountain pen, because the ball point pen is just a passing fad.

Okay, so I'm a little slow on the take sometimes... Or maybe I just don't understand the concept here.
If schools aren't teaching cursive anymore, how do kids write papers or take notes in class? Do they print?

Yup, they print.
I was talking to a high school principal a while ago. She had received complaints from a couple of students that the teacher's blackboard writing was indecipherable. She went in and saw what she thought was clear writing. You guessed it--the teacher was writing in cursive and a small number of students simply lacked the background to read it. The times they are a-changing. John

Hank and Al,
Interesting. I've heard a lot of similar experiences with learning penmanship. When I went to school (I'm 29 now) we did learn the right way to hold a pencil and we had to write daily and work on being legible, but I remember very little actual instruction and what we did have was based on "can I read it" more than "does it look good." When my stepmother went to school not only was penmanship (including cursive) standard, so was calligraphy. It's not something I'm interested to learn on my own (yet), but I've always wished I had learned calligraphy and penmanship.

My daughter, who is 16, was taught cursive, though like myself, has developed a mix of joined-up, as we call it more commonly over here, and printed.
My mother who is 85, still writes in the most beautiful copperplate. When I receive a card from her, it is such a pleasure to look at her lovely script. I wonder if there was any outcry when they stopped teaching copperplate and put cursive onto the curriculum? Ray.

I guess the other thing is that there are other things that kids need to learn these days. For example typing is absolutely essential, I learned on my own (Mavis Beacon anyone?) as a kid, but it really should be part of schools nowadays. I guess if it's one or the other (not that it has to be) I would prefer typing over cursive.
Ray, My grandmother, 90 years old, can't really write much nowadays because of her eyes but she also has wonderful handwriting. I didn't know what copperplate was until I saw your post and looked it up, but it may be that that is what she writes in. I'll check some old letters when I get a chance.

Long hane was the only form of pennmanship that I was taught. We drew circles across a page over, and over again to teach us the propper Palmer method. I learned how to print when I went to high school. It was a real baptism of fire. Before there were email, before there were cell phones people used to communicate by writing letters to each other, and only peorle with no class would printed a letter.

I looked it up and cursive (which includes the palmer method) is one form of longhand, but there are other types like copperplate and miniscule.
I actually am remembering writing exercises no that I think about it and I remember the loops across the page. I think it's interesting that you say your learned longhand first and then print. I definitely learned print first and was very proud of myself when I figured out how to write cursive on my own (of course I got some of the weird letters wrong, but mostly). Remember to keep your "T" bars high everyone! (reference to handwriting analysis were the height of the t bar reflect self sesteem.)

I don't think teaching kids how to curse is a good thing at all.

My mom saw that I would only type with my middle finger and thumb (and occasionally my index finger,) and that I typed very quickly and with few errors. Based on that she re-worked the entire typing curriculum for my school district. I can't be sure of exactly what she did because I was out of typing classes by then, but I think they realized that there's more than one way to skin a cat. I'm not sure why skinning a cat was relevant to typing, but I don't have the Ph. D in education. That's her field.

Hey, while I have you guys here talking about handwriting (and cursing!)
When you write a capital "I" in cursive, do you start from the lower right corner or the lower left? My wife and I both always start at the lower left, but I recently learned that the "standard" way is the start from the lower right and make the large loop first, clockwise.

You are right about the capital I, and there also is a Catholic school capital F. I did not learn to print EVER. The nuns taught that if you can master the Palmer method printing will be a snap, so my first 8 years of school was ALL long hand. When I first started performing I used to send hand written thank you cards to customers, then some one told that it made me look like an amatuer, so I stopped writing my thank you cards.
