I have been performing mentalism for many years and I have noticed that a lot of magicians do not like what I do. I was doing a show recently for around 200 people and for some reason after the show the magician (hobbies) was trash talking me, the weird thing was there was a lot of other magicians who were older and they thought that it was an amazing show? Has anything like this happened to you before?

Confront them and it will never happen again.
Then tell them to get out or you will throw them out. If you cannot do it find a big freind and have him do it for you. Jim

People (ESPECIALLY magicians) are often intimidated by what they do not understand. Ignore them.

Good lord, what terrible advice.
Now, the original post left a lot of details out, but I'm assuming it was either a show open to the public, or else the magi were guests. In either case , trying to toss them out (or getting your big brother [HA]) would either be a publicity fiasco, or a lawsuit. (At least I didn't get the feeling from your post that they were being "drunk and disorderly"---merely disrespectful.) Now, the interesting piece of information is what exactly were they saying? Were they dissing your technical skills, or your narrative abilities, or what? Now, I'd be more tempted to believe that they were nothing more than jealous, in which case you can pretty much ignore them. Many magi (and I suspect mentalists) are and always will be jealous of others' success. |

Hmmmm magicians in the audience? Was it a magic convention? Well younger magicians, myself included want a more exciting performance not phony science explanations and dull performances that appeal to an older audiences.

But I am sure you will ignore it for that will make it better. Heck you do not even have the guys to fill out your profile info.

I don't even understand the first post. Magicians don't like his show, one magician didn't like the show, other magicians liked the show....perhaps you need to work on communicating.

Your OP seems to indicate that it was just one person ("magician"), and that other "magicians" (plural) acted more appropriately. I've run into this type pf person in every phase of my performing career. In most cases, nothing will change the culprit. Just deal with it professionally, politely and as the bigger person. |

Are we presuming the performance in question was dull and full of phony science explanations? We don't know that at all. Come on, man, take it easy.

Perhaps part of the problem with the magicians is the younger performers not understanding the "phoney scientific explanations", or respecting the mechanics of mentalism.

No the phony science and talks about JB Rhine are very tired, and the same corny jokes over and over, the obnoxious props on stage, the 10 minute revelation of a card(I see a card and there are lots of colors), lets not forget all the not very strong let me predict a 1 out of 5 prediction effects either. Yes as people get older they get a little more dull, not everyone of course but many do. Perfect example, Lawrence Welk.

The fact the guy was a magician is secondary, not primary. This is just poor people skills, which might tip you off about his performance skills.

I should add that I am not one that just complains and trashes others, I love mentalism but it reminds me of punk rock 75% if it is way too slow and boring, 5% is way too fast and makes no sense and 20% is incredibly entertaining.

I've seen a quite few young ones that are dull. I believe I'm reading the comments of one right now, Ted. |

I thank you for helping make my point brody for I knew you would.
You stood up for yourself as you should and did so because you were slagged just as the original poster was after the show. So why would you do so here and not in person? (Stand up for yourself). Jim
