For you fans of great rock concerts VH1 is running Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers show from Winterland in San Francisco from December 1978 under their Classic Concerts. Tom Petty has said this was his best concert known for his tossing himself off the stage at the end of the show into the audience. He claimed he fell, he jumped. It was not only a great show but I was there! I didn't know it was filmed. It also was the second to last concert at Winterland, the next night or two nights later (I don't recall) I was thrilled to see the Greatful Dead, Riders of the Purple Sage, and the fantastic Blues Brothers close down that great venue. Two weeks earlier they did a radio concert of Bruce Springsteen which is considered a legendary show, Winterland was also where Peter Frampton Comes Alive was taped. Great venue for music.

December 1978. That would have been around my first birthday.

Up yours!

Correction, it didn't look right and the concert is in Santa Monica a couple days before Winterland. The dead show is on video and shown on PBS every so often.

That's not really my thing, I was just a little kid in 1978.

I don't hear this song referenced much, so I assume it's not very popular; but, here's one of my favorite Tom Petty songs:

Well, while I'm at it here's one my other favorites (I think this one is more popular):

Tom Petty and the HB are an excellent band. I've seen them perform periodically since their first album and they always deliver the goods. Here is one of my favorites.

Good stuff. I hadn't heard the first before and hadn't heard the second in a long time. This is a good thread!

Petty's second album was his break through, I think it is called "Your Gonna Get It", and it outstanding. You need to pick that up, also Briefcase Full Of Blues by the Blues Brothers if you can find it and Meatloaf Bat Out of Hell and you will be a happy camper.

Meatloaf!?
I tried to find a better clip, but this is what we used to hear every Sunday night at the University theatre before they shut it down (they still play it in Oakland, but I hear it's not the same):

I don't think so much that it's not a popular song,it's a remake of a Byrds song from the 60's.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

OK
Bat out of hell - awesome! Now I want to go out and buy a chopper! I only know a few meat loaf songs, mostly later stuff, but I like them.

The Byrds - well, I like Tom Petty's versions better, but probably just because that's what I heard first
