Thinness of the insert has been an issue with this concept and I am very excited to hear that you may have solved this problem. If I were to purchase a set in Morgan Dollars, would you be selecting the set so they match or would you need me to send you the coins? Also, what would the price be? Again thank you for your innovation. Regards, Alan |

Hi Alan,
Contact me by E-mail it's better for me to explain my work. Usually, it's more interesting for you if you send me your coins. My prices depend on two part. First part is my labor and second part is coins's price. This last part increase day after day, it's a big problem for us... Just to give you an idea of price, now Ambivalence "classic" cost 300 euros in Morgan$ 1921.

Hi, I'm kind of new to coin magic (only got serious about it a few month ago), but managed somehow to get a set complet from Xavier. I have to say the coins are splendid and Xavier's service and response are excellent!
I also bought the Ambivalence and must still get used to it, but I can say I'm very happy with my purchase! Highly recommended! |

Taklyt-
You may be new to coin magic, but you have style. I took a look at your blog (in your profile) and the recycled cigar box you re-purposed for your coin gaffs is very fine looking. The wood stain in particular looks great. Although I don't speak French the pictures show pretty clearly how you did it. Needless to say, I think I may see some Dremel projects in my future. One question, did you have difficulty in finding the thin wood you used for coin trays? Welcome to the Café. Alan |

Alan,
I agree. The box looks spectacular! Congratulation, Taklyt! My dad recently gave me a similar box. Taklyt, you have inspired me to try to make it a place for my most special coins. Welcome to the Café! Sammy

To answer a question by funnybiz, the copper coin is an Austrian 19 century coin. I prefer using copper plated coins for the effects not to suggest a switch between one sort of coin and another (like the usual hald dollar to English penny: it's not even the same country). With copper plated coins, the effect seems like a change of matter rather than a secret coin switch: it seems more "magic".
Thus I asked Xavier to copper plate some coins for me. After a few trials it worked fine and the copper doesn't ware off. One unexpected result from this is that it made me realize that audiences expect magic to make cheaper coins become more precious. Hence it makes sense in wild coins effects for example, or in Tommy Wonder's exceptional Counterfeit Coins routine (in Spectacle by Stephen Minch), to go from copper to silver rather than the other way around. As another example, the technically perfect routine by Mike Rubinstein called Twilight Zone, would have been most probably more successful if the hero of his story had been ending up with precious coin. There is a general slant towards empathy in entertainment. Thus Mike could have started his story with a rich and famous magician (show silver coins first) giving a poor shoe shine man an apparently cheap tip (Spellbound variant with copper "change") but having actually given the poor lad magic copper coins that would become precious (silver) when brought to the bank. It seems to me that the routine would have gotten more fame (without having to add any technical variant) by using a happy end (credited to magic). Maybe this is what made Albert Goshman create the Sun and Moon the way he did? So why not dare considering using copper plated barbers: our audiences (with very few exceptions) have never seen such old coins and don't know that they are supposed to be silver: thus, with the gain in value from copper to sterling silver, the changes become much more magic... and attractive When we do a bill change, we don't usually change a 5$ into a 1$, we intuitively do the opposite: why not do this with coins now that the props are there.
Magic is the art of emotionally sharing live impossible situations

Thank you Alan and Sammy!
Actually I did not use wood (tough I would have prefered to) for the coin tray but thick carboard and leather that I had, the purpose of the project being to come up with something quick and cheap. Now that I own more valuable coins, I will certainly try to find more noble materials! I tend to agree with you Lawrence, and I just got some (fake I'm affraid) gold plated half dollar to add value to a copper/silver routine. I wish I could afford large gold coins... |
