Are there any records for escaping from straitjackets? I'm mostly interested in if there are ones for the time it takes to escape from a Posey with front and side arm loops or without the arm loops.

Good question. I was thinking about that a little while ago myself. My personal best for an untricked Posey with loops is about 60 seconds, about 90 while walking on stilts. You could start a trend Dorian.

I'm going to be setting one in September...for the greatest number of Posey escapes in 8 hours.
I'm aiming for about 120... James |

WOW, 60 seconds! I would LOVE to see you do that! Any pictures or videos? I looked at your website before and only found video of a suspended escape.

Hi Dorian
There are pictures of standing escapes with a Posey there too, but the best straitjacket video I have is of a suspended escape with a DeVal jacket. I have some video of me walking on stilts while escaping from a Posey if you would like to see it. Please bear in mind that it was the first time I had actually done it so it is not all that quick. Also, it was done at a circus training session with no members of the public present so there is no 'performence' put into it either. It was also on bloody tight too, as I didn't steal any slack because I wanted to get the full effect for practice. Let me know if you want a link to the video and I will PM it too you. Thanks for the plug Scott. Where have you been, I have not seen you around recently mate? Cheers all David Straitjacket

I am being torn thin. I have 2 nightclub gigs, street magic, a book I'm trying to write, Docc Hillfords lecture last night and some women issues! That's enough to keep me busy. I should be back to normal next week. Thanks for asking!

Hi all,
I completly forgot about the vid, sorry! Here is the link http://www.thefreakshow.co.uk/forum/posey.rm Hope you like it. Like I said, it was the first time I had tried and I am not "performing" it as such. Just getting out. Cheers David Straitjacket

Dave,
That's an excellent video! I'm glad I'm not the only one that looks that knackered after getting out! Take care James |

Just downloaded your video, good work. I'm most impressed because of the complete lack of slack you appeared to have and the fact that you are on stilts! I've escaped from my Posey in 60 seconds as well, but it usually takes a lot longer.

Anyone who knows anything knows that Vince Mancuso holds the record for getting out a Posey in 16 seconds.

Then I obviously don't know anything.

16 seconds? Didn't Harry and Hardeen drag it out for a half hour? I must have missed something as well.

Hi all,
Glad you like the vid. Yep, as I said above there was no slack at all. I did my best to make sure it was on as tight as possible. Including breathing out completly as the final tension was applied. I always do stuff like that in practise, I find it helps prepare you for the worst on stage. The tightness was also part of the reason I was so knackered when I had finished, I just couldn't draw a good breath and was really lacking in oxygen, which I am told is essential for many activities. Have fun David Straitjacket

Sure... whatever you say.
My previous posting (see above) was not in response to your comments David but rather to the wise individual who implied we all probably know nothing. Regards Santini |

Never heard of him so I'm going to agree with Santini.
Man, I actually thought I knew something and all the while I was clueless. Well now I know I'm clueless so I guess I know something after all. Quote: On 2003-07-29 18:01, Odini731 wrote:

The straightjacket, when going for a record, is not about dragging it out at all. You drag it out for an audience but when going for the record you get out as fast as possible. The only reason I posted something about Mancuso (The Great Vindini) is that I saw him do it in Vegas and couldn't believe it. You all may know a great deal of information, just not about current records. If you are looking for current records, why would you look in the past you have to look at the young people who are new and getting out? Personally I get out in 26 seconds which is faster than your 30 second escapes. I started after I saw Vindini in Vegas.

I had heard of this record but Guinness voided it as they could not be sure the jacket was 100% authentic.
As a result of constant complaints and revelations by magicians and other escape artists pointing out that people escaping from authentic straitjackets can not be done in 3 seconds—provided they are secured properly (which was the time one magician submitted in his claim)—so they stopped listing and killed off the Escapology Records in the book/website with only the UK's Nick Janson being recorded. It has taken a long time for this damage to be repaired and it now means those of us who are trying to set the records have to be 100% clear in our rules and plans so as not to destroy all our hard work. It is possible to escape from handcuffs 720 times in one hour, if the cuffs are imported from Japan and have various gimmicks in them. Guinness World Records identifies the handcuff world record for fastest escape and most escapes in one hour. The rules for the handcuff escapes specify a specific cuff and style of demonstration but give the performer the option of just how s/he can escape. The rules for the SJ escapes are now equally as strict and I doubt if anyone can top Mr. Peters attempt in London where he escaped from 100 in a little under 7 hours. The question now becomes, what jacket make? Who put you in it? What tension in the straps? Were they medically qualified to put you in a SJ? What size is the straitjacket? Finally, who did the timing and does that include being put in it or waiting until you say go (which is usually when a person is three quarters of the way out)? This means that the timings will never match the greats of the pasts, such is the competition we are in. Good luck to those who can do it and keep trying if, like me, you can't quite hook the elbow out and have to do it the long way. Magicians and escapologists do not like the use of jackets that were too easy to escape from when they were doing it the hard way. But then again, what do I know? |
