Reminds me of a great old Joe Berg routine. He comes on saying his luggage was lost so he needs to borrow things from the audience. He goes out with a hat and folks drop things in... one of which is a stooge who drops in some gaffed items.

I have a set of Joe Morgar knives and his work is excellent. I ordered a 3 knives set and he is so kind to give me a gift and sent me an extra rainbow knife. I don't know what made him to that, but with a little touch of magic, he made magic more possible to be enjoyed by people around the world.
If you are planning to order from Joe, go ahead and don't think twice =) he has really good customer service as well and really responds to his email very timely. |

Since my last post in this thread on January 30, 2011, Whit Haydn has convinced me that his knives and routine, "The Intricate Web of Distraction" was the way to go. As usual, Whit was right on the money......His knives are made by Joe Mogar, and are available along with his routine on the School For Scoundrels Website.
In my opinion, the biggest challenge with doing color-changing knives are not the knives themselves......rather...its presenting a well thought out and entertaining routine....Whit has solved that problem with his routine. It's GREAT and highly recommended. As I said in my post above....it was a privilege to watch Matt Schulien do his version of the color-changing knives........he was a REMARKABLE entertainer and literally kept people laughing for hours.......maybe it was the Carling Red Label beer he liked so much! |

People don't carry knives around with them as much as we used to. And now with all the ridiculous security concerns they are not as knife friendly at a lot of places. So I made myself a set of color changing USB jump drives. All the same routines work - just an update to an older trick.

As usual, timing is EVERYTHING... I used to have some great patter for a pen thru bill when the big head bills first came out and GWB was Pres. Now I am working on a topical storyline using Chad Long's Flash drives centered around Hillary Clintons "missing e-mails" and backup system for her personal / government accounts (red / black) (The finally... being the long black drive needed to keep the possibly incriminating ones) I am not trying to make this a political issue, rather a light hearted political patter that most people would "get the joke". Anyone care to brainstorm a little???

Later Jose de La Torra come out with a regular knife set that were really nice, with no loop on one end. Again, I believe these also come from Spain. |

I find it interesting that only two post concerned the actual secret behind the magic with the color changing knives. Even then not one comment that anyone actually performs a routine with the knives, or the routine they have chosen to present.
So this is a topic of collectors only, I guess. Not one comment on presentations selected, peoples reactions when witnessing their routines. To bad, so many here on the Café are collectors and magicians. I have the complete Ascanio World of knives set with pouches, pulls, holders, as well. Plus a set from Ken Brooke, one is white and the is Calico design handles. Big Deal! |

Bill,
I perform CCK regularly with great reaction. My final change is in the hand of the spectator and they are always left with mouth wide open. Here in the Midwest it is not uncommon for someone to have a pen knife in their pocket - frankly less suspicious than if I pulled out a thumb drive! I do use Joe Mogar knives - I like the rough-smooth finish. I don't even have to think with reaching into my pocket to get and display the knife properly. Hudson |

I received a few sets of Joe Mogar knives a few weeks ago all the way from America to the UK. The are beautifully made and handle like a dream.
Joe gave me a few free gifts with my purchase: 1 X Black Knife 1 X White/Black Knife 1 X Joe's Knife routine DVD "Chameleon Knives" 1 X Pocket Pal Don't forget these items above were all free! I did have a problem with one of my knives, in that there was a small crack in the plastic by one of the rivets. But Joe is sending me a replacement free of charge and said I do not need to return the damaged one. What a nice guy he is and I have never dealt with a dealer who is so generous. I am a Very Happy Chappy! |

I use cheapo empire magic knives that are replicas of Ed Drane knives. It has a trick locking blade I use in my routine, so a "better" set would not even work for me. I do like the idea of color changing things other than knives, but a flash drive doesn't seem right. Has nobody thought of a color changing highlighter?
Reality is a real killjoy.

Of course, the added feature of the special safety locking/unlocking knife provides an added dimension with built in misdirection. Brevity is the key here for some knock-their-socks off Magic. Using the regular knife in a stabbed in the pack routine etc. before or after the CC is good theatre, too. It's worthwhile to track down a copy for reference. Julie |

Our local magic dealer tells me that the instructions that come with the current knives by marketed by Loftus Novelty, do come with the original instructions that Edward O. Drain provided. Loftus seems to want to do things right.

As a passing note: The original Enardo Knife sets were available in both Two Knife and Three Knife versions.

If that is the case, our local magic shop never carried the 3 knife version, nor have I heard of it back then. I did see an ad once by someone that was selling a look alike Enardo knife set with 3 knives, but it was long after Enardo was out of business.

Hi Bill
It's the 100% truth. I have been involved in magic from both the dealer side and performing side for a great many years and wouldn't steer you wrong. Yes, I do have a vintage Enardo (Drane) 3 knife set complete with box and original instructions in my Collection. Julie |

I seem to remember that when I got my set, it was at Phil Thomas' Yogi Magic Mart. This was in the late seventies. He had black, white and black/white and you could mix and match.

I will add my voice in support of Pop Haydn's "Intricate Web of Distraction".
It's an absolutely fabulous routine that takes the heat off of the knives, plays well in close-up or parlour, has excellent timing, routining, and patter, and has a killer ending and kicker. The trick has been a reputation-maker for me, and I carry it with me wherever I go. By the way, I also suggest the Joe Mogar knives that were designed to Pop Haydn's specifications. They are practical but beautiful, and their texture allows one to place them all in the same pocket and pull them out without fumbling. While you're at it, get some other Pop Haydn products. My personal favorite happen to be the Chicago Surprise, Mongolian Pop Knot, Specific Resonance, Coins Across, and Six Card Trick, all of which I perform. |

I'm going back a bit here but I've always been partial to Scotty York's 4 knife set and routine (knives unfortunately no longer available I believe). Just wish there was a way to get them through baggage check.
