I have a couple of news segments coming up this Friday and I was wondering what trick you guys recommend doing on the news. We have already done Hundy 500, cardtoon, and a couple of other ones. We were debating a close-up type of cardiographic, possibly pressure, but I wanted to see your opinion.
Any thoughts?

It might help if people who have done this, good or bad, gave parameters of what would work well. I've noticed that on T.V. they often give very little time and they may be interrupting much more often than a normal spectator.
I have not done this myself but I'm very interested. Great subject and Good Luck Joey! - Mary Mowder |

If you can't perform it in under a minute, forget about it. TV "news" shows want very short effects, with the emphasis on talking about the topic.

Yeah, pressure is great!
Thanks, Mary, I'll be sure to link it here so you can see it! Under a minute is the thing I'm looking for. That has ruled out many tricks. I want to mainly make it entertaining. I think that's the main thing when being on TV. It's all about their audience. Also the times I've done it, especially on local news stations, you have very little control over the camera angles. That needs to be taken into account. On one segment I will be sitting, on the other I will be standing. I once bought a routine called Labelled that may be good to do on TV. Any other ideas for good, quick, visual tricks?

Lou...nice hit man! The few seconds you were on looked great. You came off as cool, calm and collected...
Joey, Pressure is great for this. Hopefully, you're doing my version as it plays so much better than the T11 version. Visual is a must. Keep everything short and sweet and make sure it's super visual. If you're doing card stuff, do a series of color changes. The iVanish is one that will leave quite an impression, tho' since TV folks are classic for screwing us on angles, you may have an issue with that. Even a simple sponge ball transpo in the hand of the TV Host will work fine. Good luck please post the segment once it airs so we can watch! Christopher

I've been on TV a number of times, and for adult audiences, the rising cards is perfect, jumbo or regular deck.
A couple of tips: Try to get ith the director before you go on to let him or her know when to zoom in. Always do your bit "lightly" with a smile. Be ready with a second trick, just in case they ask you for more. Be careful of your wardrobe....you will want to wear something that won'e either "wash out" or blend in with the set.....do your homework.... |

How about crazy man's handcuffs, into another linking band effect that leaves them with a keepsake? I beleive there are a few that can end that way. Short, simple and pretty good with angles.

Thanks for the input! Ben, yeah CMH was another one I was thinking about. It's an excellent quick trick.
Chris, I do have your 2.0 and haven't done it that way, yet, but I may try do it that way on the news. As I do love the ending better.

TV is great for angle-y stuff that is impractical in the real world.
I used a modified version of Derren Brown's Zamiel's Rose which uses a tenkai heavy sleight of his called the Figaro change. Stuff like Marlo's Snap/Miracle Change or maybe some Hollingworth would be great too. Also if you mind the lighting thread work shows up really nicely on tv.

For the past 11 or so years I've been a semi regular guest on a morning news program here in my local market. I think I've performed at least 100 different effects live. I've performed most of my spots live in front of a classroom of children, pre-k through high school. On occasion I have had the opportunity to do a trick for all adult audiences too. If you are performing live, make sure you talk to the cameraman before your shot. Tell him exactly what you plan to perform so he will know what it is he is supposed to be getting a shot of and will also know if he needs a tight shot or a wide shot. If the shot is tight, be aware that almost all TV stations now run a news feed across the bottom of the page. Check to see if the station you are appearing on does this during their program. If the cameraman is shooting you in close and still trying to get your face in the shot, the card, coin,(whatever) trick taking place about waist high in your hands will be behind the little scrolling words. You may get a great reaction from your live audience but the tv audience will be wondering what in the world you just did. This is the first year I've needed to watch out for this but it happened when I was performing a color changing thumb drive routine (same as color changing knives but cool for schools) at a high shcool. Know exactly who you will be performing for and play to that audience (children, teens, adults or just the anchors) and perform what you know will impress them, not other magicians that might see the thing. One of my best segments this year was when I performed a coloring book routine for a classroom of 1st graders. I'm sure the trick didn't impress a single magician but reaction from the kids did. That's all I got. Good Luck and Break a Leg.
Oh I might add, the best tricks to perform are visual, simple to follow and quick. |

Maybe "Clean Through/Clear Through", the finger penetration part for super quick and the $ bills for if you have a bit more time.
Larry Jennings "Close Up Illusion" is very strong and fast, esp. since you can cut it off anywhere in a pinch. "Gypsy Thread" with very little or no patter. Pre time the effects so if the say how long you have you can go into something time appropriate quickly. I'd love to see the link, thanks. - Mary Mowder |

Simon Aronson's Side Swiped. This has been my number 1 pick for TV for years. I've always said that if I were to be on a TV show doing magic, this would be the effect. It's an ingenious and impossible trick.

I have used a version of Pressure and Air Tight together, utilizing my deck switch to great results. I think having the host involved is paramount if you want a repeat booking. Fo this reason the first effect I use is my Torn 2 Pieces as it it personal and fast. It can also be shot to frame your face during the effect if you have time to talk to the floor manager and director. I also love the Omni Deck. In fact I love it so much I bought the right to manufacture and sell it from now on. A couple of examples of these effects are linked below:

Also, here is Shawn on Ellen. This is a "talkshow" segment rather than a "news" segment. There are vast differences between the two, so I wouldn't recommend doing what Shawn has done here. Not only that, he hasn't marketed the closing effect yet. I just wanted to share this because Shawn is on of the best magicians on the planet and you guys have to see this clip. His performance is flawless.
