Hello all,
Lately, I've been looking at getting a new magic wand, as the one that I am currently using is too long (about 40.6 inches) and thick (approximately 2cm thick but just eyeballed). What are some reasonably priced (preferably < $40, but a few dollars over is fine)magic wands that you use? I am looking for a wand that can be used for my cups & balls routine. I'm alright with using a gimmicked wand, provided that I can use it for other things. Suggestions? Thanks, Mahucharn |

Use the search engine posted above in the bracketed area titled [Search]. And just type in magic wand.
Most recommendations will not run you under $40. Just get the Tango wands from Penguin, Elmwood, Mad Hatter, etc. I'm pretty sure you did not really mean 40.6 inches right? So your doing magic a little more than 3 feet away from your props. How about painting & varnishing dowels from paper towel holders, now that's got to be the most inexpensive path. Can your current one be cut down and repainted? Some stores sell the plastic Harry Potter wands if you care for that organic look and style or take a walk in the park to find that right one. Just use the search function and also google for wands so you can get a perspective on what is out there. It does take a little more effort on your part. Ok then. buena suerte |

That would be almost 16 inches long, which is a fairly long wand. Most wands sold over here are between 30 cm and 35 cm, which is roughly 12 to 14 inches. Drum sticks are generally in the range of about 15 to 16 inches, so you might want to get one and cut it down. Timbale sticks are usually shorter and thinner.

I've been trying to get hold of some lengths of hardwood dowel, it's pretty hard to get anything except cheap pine in the UK!

How about the mercury wand. Sells for about $25. I really like that wand.

As Pete said; "drumstick". More specifically, timbale stick. Often available in hickory.

I would second the recommendation for Michael Ammar's Mercury Wand. I've found the size and the weight to be perfect for me, including wand spins.

I would not recommend the Mercury wand if your going to bang or even hit your cups at all. It will damage the cups every time it touches the cups. I like the weight nd size of the mercury wand but hate it otherwise.
There is a fantastic wand that is fairly cheap ($20) made by Mikame craft. I think Joe Stevens sells them. I got mine at my local brick and mortar store. It has wood tips which will not damage your cups. I also highly recomend the wands available at RNT2 ....they cost a little more than $40 but you get the options of a longer wand and a shorter wand with one purchase. Two wands in one. |

Rannie (screen name here) a.k.a. rannie raymundo made a couple of custom wands for me that were absolutely excellent and can make them out of exotic woods as well. If you can sketch roughly what you want, tell him the types of woods and colors, plus specifications for length, width, or what ever, he can make you a very beautiful and practical custom wand at what I consider to be a very reasonable price for such work.

He asked the lady behind the counter "is there a B & Q in Reading?" She said, "No. There's an 'R', there's an 'E', there's an 'A'...."

Thanks Bill, I've done all the B&Q's, Homebase etc etc to no avail, I'll try the less "commercial" places next.
The Paul Daniels story reminds me of an old joke about the man who goes into a fish and chip shop asking for fish, chips and peas. The lady behind the counter replies, "Sorry we've sold out of peas." He just keeps repeating his request again and again. Eventually she tires of him and says: "Let me spell it out for you, we have no peas, that's (literally spelling the letters out) N O P E A F S" The guy say's "There's no F in peas!" "Finally" the lady replies.... |

I'm actually considering small wands (6-8") for several pockets (the better to hide/load) that I saw on eBay. a dozen for just a few bucks

Tabman wands are really nice. Also, check out RNT II selection of wands. A bit pricey yes, but very handy as they are convertible to a mini-wand as well. Very good craftsmanship, nice weight, overall a great wand. They have lotsa nice woods, mine is macassar ebony and it is a real beauty.
