Pardon my ignorance on this subject - I've never worked with any flash products before.
I'm wondering if there's such a thing as an envelope made of flash paper? If it did exist, would I be able to hand it to a spectator without them suspecting anything of it? This may be a ridiculous question and if so...feel free to laugh and then respond appropriately. I'm wanting to hand out an envelope with a card in it to a spectator, have them hold onto it for a few minutes, take it back and have it, well...go up in smoke. Thanks! Andrew

I have never seen FP envelopes. FP is chemically treated tissue paper and envelope paper would be to thick. Depending on the size of envelope you are needing, one could make an envelope with a full sheet of FP, but trust me, that is ALOT of flash at once! How close to your spectator will you be when it goes FHAWOOM?
Seeing that you are in the UK, I am not familiar with the laws of how FP is sold so that is something to consider. FP can coloured in a quick, safe, and easy way if needed also. If colouring FP interests you, send a PM. |

I live in the UK at the moment, however this is an application that I wouldn't be using until I'm back in the states (I live in L.A., I'm just here for a year.)
I'm not dead-set on the idea and will probably go in a different direction, but was interested in finding out the feasibility of it since, as I said, I haven't used any flash products before.

Hmmm I had an idea based on a Tarbell idea of a letter form the devil which then went phoom and talked about giving it to a spectator to read before it went phoom. His comment was that he never lights FP when it is being held by a spectator....too many law suits.
If you want to make an FP envelope templates for envelopes are available and you could make your own. Conversely I have seen FP put into a standard envelope and then the entire envelope is lit. This would require much less FP - consider that I normally use a piece about 3 in by 2 in. Flash pads (which I have not use)d, may also give a good guide to a sensible size. Best wishes, Danny |

I would be very, very careful letting a spectator handle any flash paper items as big as an envelope.
As was mentioned above, a piece of flash paper in a standard envelope would at least make a nice flash and singe the envelope pretty good. Not sure it would actually catch fire. An envelope could be easily made from a sheet of flash paper, but as said above, that is a lot of flash paper and do you really need that effect? Whatever your decision, make sure your performing insurance is paid up, have a fire extinguisher nearby, and have someone available who knows what part of you, or someone else being on fire is NOT part of the act, and needs to be put out immediately. I made "lucky money" envelopes out of flash paper for the "bill in lemon" gag. Burning a real envelope took too long for my purposes.
The little three sided envelope they use to give money to kids on Chinese New Year was perfect. Of course mine weren't red. That wasn't a problem, but I glued the flash paper at the bottom and down the middle with rubber cement. The two seams made a "T" that did not burn! It worked for me because I threw the burning envelope into a production pan to burn. I used the pan to produce a lemon, lime and orange.

You can make envelopes out of flash paper.to glue the parts use nail polisher (=flash glue) or just some glue-stick.I would say that you should make small envelopes in order to reduce the cost, because there is not reason to make big ones and because flash paper ,even the thicker, is not hard enough to appear as envelope.

I thought I might repeat the question as I have been looking for the same thing. I've cut a template to make my own but it would be far easier if someone sold these.
Thanks, Dan |

Nail polish is like flash glue, really? Interesting.

Here are some FP envelopes that can fit a playing card.

First those envelopes on Ebay are just flash paper folded into envelopes. any one can do that and save some money.
the bigger issue right now is that the number one maker of flashpaper closed up shop and no longer makes it. the stuff out there now is thicker and more brittle and burns slower. horrible really. totally screwing up my show due to this lesser quality flash paper. but if you want to make the envelope out of a full or half sheet its pretty easy do so. if you want it colored contact me and I can tell you how to color flash paper. its in my lecture notes but will share if you need color envelopes. i use color flash paper that I make for my show. and color flash string too. there are flash playing cards out there that work really well but not sure if that will help you with your routine. sam

For burning something in an envelope for things like 'bill in lemon' and simar routines. Many people I know use a small cheap envelope but loaded with a roll/wad of flash paper in there taking the place of the bill. So when the corner of the envelope is lit, it goes up pretty quick leaving almost just half an envelope which is then dropped in an ashtray and finishes quite quickly.
