Ok, I know this has probably been talked about to death now, but I want to know what are your thoughts in mixing magic into a mentalism show or vise versa?

Depends on your skill set.

I guess my question is, I am starting to routine a mentalism show but am kind of leery of mixing some magic into the mix. I don't want people thinking that since I also do magic, that the mentalism part of the show are just mere tricks. Sorry if this is kind of confusing.

Oh boy, the flood gates are open.... My opinion - DON'T DO IT! (why would you want to? Why cloud something that the audience accepts as real or possible with something they know is deception, an illusion or magic? Why, I ask, why?!?!?

Thanks MindPro, that is kinda what I had in mind as well. I have seen other magicians do this and frankly, it kinda proved to me that what they were doing was basically just mental magic tricks mixed in with some illusions. I hope I just didn't open up a can of worms or something. I know this is a very touchy subject.

Sorry for bringing up old topics. My opinion is that through the years peoples' views change. I was just curious on some thoughts regarding this topic. Thanks everyone who responded. Take care.

Some are able to mix the two effectively, but IMO most are not. My preference is to avoid the temptation to mix the genres because IMO as soon as you do anything that is clearly and unequivocally a "magic trick" you undermine the credibility of anything you want to be perceived as being mentalism. I understand and accept the fact that others hold the contrary view. Some will point out that Kreskin typically opens his stage show with a magic trick, as I am told Dunninger did before him; however, in both cases that is what they OPEN with and that they justify by saying that they started as magicians -- after that introduction, the rest is all mentalism, or in Kreskin's case, mentalism followed by his demonstrations of "suggestion" (since he denies that there is such a thing as hypnotism).
