Ok... I saw Marc Desouza review this book in MUM.
I really like Marc's reviews and I trust him and take his advise. He gave this book a good review, so I bought it, and I agree. By the look of the name, you would think it's about handling hecklers and assistants. It does have some of this in it, but that comes at the end. The real gem is the rest of the contents. It's about constructing your act so that when you get assistants on stage you don't have to manage them. Or that you have put together an act that you won't have hecklers and the assistants will manage themselves. There is some really good advise on how to build a proper act. Everybody that actually performs, or wants to perform, needs to read this book. It gives help on all the mistakes that so many magicians make. I can think of a handful of people I know who need to read this book!! Even if you are a professional, you will enjoy reading about the stuff that you are doing right, but there will be something in there that you like and will put to work. There are a lot of quotes in the book from famous people of all walks of life. Each quote has to do with the topic at hand. This is one of my favorites... writer: I have a very good idea for a musical play, and I would like to present it to you and appreciate your comments, Mr Bernstein. Leonard Bernstein: Very well, write your idea on the back of your business card and I will contact you if I like your idea. writer: But of course there is not room enough on the back of a business card to explain my idea! Leonard Bernstein: Well, then it isn't a very good idea. This quote is part of the section about not making your act so complicated that your audience grows bored or doesn't understand it. The book follows the belief of KISS.. 'Keep It Simple Stupid' You will find some great advise, knowledge, examples, experiments, and even assignments. And to tell the truth... Time you get to the end of the book where it does talk, very little actually, about on stage audience management... you won't need it. This is a must for performers. Randi |
