There is a video on YouTube demonstrating Dynamic coins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=La-cmq3Ahh0) in which the performer doesn't use the bang ring. It actually looks more impressive than the "official" method, but I can't figure out how he works this, as tapping the brass cap without the ring tightens, not loosens, the "coins" (those who have it will know what that means). Any ideas?

Thanks for the link Dave!
I believe the set he owns has 'worn out' (I think that is the English term). The gimmick fits very loosely in his caps because either the caps are 'larger' on the inside or the gimmick is 'smaller' on the outside. That's the only explanation I can think of PS.: Cyberdave03 = another David from Belgium? |

It's got to be more than that. At one point in the routine, he places the coins on one cap, covers them with the other cap, then taps the top cap - which causes the top "coins" to "disappear", and the bottom coins to "reappear" when he lifts the bottom cap. It baffles me how you can tighten one set of coins and loosen the other set with the same tap! Especially since I have the trick, so I know how it works.

Having a very early version of the Dynamic Coins I can only put this down to the much better quality of the Tenyo product?
Compared to the very badly engineered version sold by Marvin's Magic (and I've seen quite a number of Marvin's Magic DC's), the Tenyo version works as smooth as silk. Moreover, it's the only version that I've ever seen that is truly open for some pretty stringent examination and can be worked with 100% confidence. Marvin's version (and possibly otheres?) are of a woeful build quality and I doubt if it's manufactured for them under Tenyo Licence. I was still at school when I purchased mine (a Tenyo) in 1979 via Alan Alan, I remember it cost £10.95 - I had to save for it over many weeks but I more than appreciated it when I could finally afford it. 31 years later on, and I now see this trick sold on ebaY for less than £8. Like anything else in life, you get what you are willing to pay for. The modern day gimmicks have a badly engineered 'ridge' at the bottom of the stack that cannot be relied upon to make the 'fitted article' truly noiseless and look as if they have to be hit with a mallet (when new) to dislodge or replace. I can honestly remember my Tenyo version working like a dream from Day 1; and it still continues to do so.

Merc Man, I have to disagree ... .
I bought my first DC's a few years ago when I was in London at Hamley's (this got me into magic and Tenyo actually ). I bought a Marvin's Magic DC set and if works perfect. A year ago I purchased the Tenyo version that works with 1 EURO coins and it does not work good at all! - First of all the 'color' of our 'real' coins is different from what the 'gimmick' is (I tried several 1 EURO coins, even from different countries ...). - Second when placing the 'real' coin onto the gimmick it 'rattles' when moving/shaking the cap with gimmick and real coin in it. I really have to push the gimmick in so the real coin doesn't rattle. - And last, the gimmick does not come out at all fluently ... I really have to BANG the thing (yes, even when I don't 'push' the gimmick so the coin doesn't rattle). Does anyone else with the 1 EURO version has this problem? I know there is a 50 cent version of EURO - if anyone owns this I would like tot know if this set has the same problem ... . Thank you! |

Interesting comments!
The Tenyo version I have is from the 1970's and truly works like a dream. It's actually slightly smaller than the ones I see currently sold. If the older gimmicks don't mirror the apparent downturn in quality of the current day Tenyo article, then it would be interesting to hear if your problems have been experienced by others? As for the marvin's version. Along with my fascination for collecting 'all things' Ken Brooke, I also collect Magic Sets. In a number of different releases, I have accumulated four of Marvin's DC's. Honestly, they are woefully made and just don't lock into position well enough to make them examinable. Just as an aside, about 15 years ago, I seem to remember that Davenports offered a Dynamic Coin set that was guaranteed to be the best machined DC ever to hit the market. It cost around 50% more than other versions - I never saw one or have read who made it.

The experience with my Tenyo set is identical to Killertweety's second complaint. If I apply just the right amount of pressure, the coins will hold with movement of the caps, then release with minimal force. However, I have to handle the caps delicately; otherwise, you can hear the rattle of the top coin. I tried taping a bit of paper in the well, but the coins wouldn't then fit. And I just can't reproduce the method in the video. I emailed the person who uploaded it, but they haven't responded.

Try a small dab of magicians' wax between the top coin and the gimmic. When the coin is pressed against the wax it can squeeze into the low spots on the coin's surface and not add any height to it.

Or I could superglue the top coins to the other "coins", but I like to keep them loose because when I pick the stacks up to transfer them, the top coins make a "chinking" sound when I drop them to the table that helps sell the illusion.
