Does anyone have a template of a contract that can be drawn up that is to be signed by the magician and the client hiring him.

Try the Business Side of Things forum; not sure if that's the right title, but there's a forum in here for just what you're asking about....seek and ye shall find....

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Unfortunately, contract law is state dependent.
Your best bet might be a nolo book. OR a plain English contract. These days the courts are perfectly willing to accept a plain language documetn as binding as long as it clearly spells out the responsibilities of both parties. Edit: Or here is another thought... have you joined a professional magic society yet like the Sam or the IBM? I bet both have form contracts you can use, as well as things such as group liability insurance.
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.
