A few months ago I had set up a houdini style upsidedown straight jacket escape with the owner of a local club. Four days before the show we ran into legal conflicts due to the safety of the beam I was to be hanging by. (an industrial grade winch was purchased to raise me about 100 ft in the air).
Very last minute I devised an escape that I can't seem to find documentation of someone else doing. I was straightjacketed and then put into a thick plastic mattress bag (the kind a new mattress is sealed in when purchasing). I must admit, this was extremely dumb considering the time frame and danger. While I had two paramedics standing by (legit) I had not taken into effect the humidity of a mid august night and how that effects moisture in a sealed bag. It was like taking off a wet shirt times 1000. I did get out and posted it to youtube. I am always looking for some new and exciting challenge and I look forward to people checking it out and giving me feedback. Note: the video is not professional quality, just a shot a person in the crowd forwarded to me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYxpyUVUFZA thanks! enjoy! |

Why first rule of performing is never try an untried trick or escape live in a preformance. Still you made it out and any one you can walk away from is a good escape. Looked good on cam.

Father, that is probably the best advice anyone can give in magic... and sadly a rule often broken. When broken, the door is wide open for disaster.

Nice escape. At 14 minutes the video runs a little long for me, but once I'd forwarded through the getting in bit (a lesson in finding the right spec to seal you in, someone with advanced tape manipulation next time ) and got to the good stuff I enjoyed it. As did the audience it seems.
SJ in a plastic bag. Nice. I do have a problem with this escape though. And not just the one performed here may I add, I've done this myself and seen similar done by others too. My problem is the fact the plastic is so thin. What's stopping the performer from just ripping their way out? It doesn't take much to pierce a plastic bag. I tried to get round it by referring to the bag as an industrial sack. Then cutting my way out using the handcuffs I'd just escaped from. But I'm still not happy with it and have stopped doing it until I can figure out a better way. Maybe its just a thicker sack that's needed. Not sure. There's something about the believability of it that just doesn't ring true for me. I'll continue to play with it. Anyway, nice work fella.... Ros ps Have you joined TIES yet?

I agree that the video runs really long. Unfortunately it was just something someone happened to shoot. In the future I will definately have a more professional person shoot and edit for me. That being said, the bag I used was a mattress sealer bag which is considerably thick for clear plastic. In fact, it is quite difficult to rip by hand. I started with 60 gallon garbage bags but those did rip super easy and forced me to think out of the box. The mattress bag was actually pretty great and was available for people to inspect before the escape. (Using a giant knife sells the idea that it is too tough to rip also.)
Needless to say, thanks for the great feedback and I am not familiar with TIES so I am going to google it now lol. |

I once did a plastic sack version I called "The Cocoon of Death."
I was first bound in manacles, chains and a leather strap harness, and then was encased in an almost-form-fitting plastic 'cocoon.' Before one could effectively even try to tear the sack, one would have to best the other bindings. That by itself seemed to 'sell' the escape.

IMO this topic should not have been moved from the escape area. This site is getting WAY too big......it's really hard to find all the escape related posts when they are spread out all over the place.
*CAUTION* Does NOT play well with others!

Agreed Mike.
Why move an obvious escape related topic to a different area? Please put it back.

It's a video posted in the video section, where it's supposed to be.
Perhaps Scarpino can post a link in the escape section? Mike |

LOL at the opening line... "I have not yet done this successfully"; not sure if that was true, but it almost set it up for me as kind of a comedy escape... good show though

It's nice to see somebody do it differently for a change. The bag was a nice touch. There is another escape called the plastic bag escape which you might have used in conjunction? Just thinking out loud. Keep up the good work.
Peace.
Just cause they say it, doesn't make it true.
