Our magic community has always prided itself on giving credit where credit is due, we do this every day, this is one of many things that separate us from others, Jerry created it , yes, Dan discovered it on his own, yes, he added a video, but by no means is the gimmick superior, it is identical, I have both, and Jerry should “suck it up” , that just goes against everything we stand for, fortunately even Dan does not agree with that gibberish, Dan has handled this in a classy and professional manner and that’s the bottom line. I hope they both continue to make their magic, they are both brilliant contributors to our magic fraternity, and Jerry deserves the acknowledgement.

He got the acknowledgment, Dan has made it very clear. We also as magicians say that it is not the toy that is important it is what you can do with it but then I hear people say it is $10 less over at another site or that it is identical it makes me wonder how much people value the thought process that goes behind creating routines for the cool gimmicks we have. so for $10 you get a pro teaching you signature routines and you get to see Harlan work for real people. I think that is worth the release. Again Jerry came up with the original idea but Harlan came up with his own way to construct the gimmick and added a lot of value by including more than just a piece and 1 routine.

Maybe we can start getting into the reviews of Switchblade, I'm curious to hear how people are using it.

A review:
Dan provides excellent training and handling of new and original effects for this gimmick, he makes it easy to follow and understand, he goes way beyond in his thinking of this effect and in some cases he uses it in reverse to astonishing reactions, this is something no one else has done with it, if you own the original, you owe it to yourself to buy the Harlan version, just to see what can be done with it. To sum it up, it is a very impressive tool that is fun and easy to use, virtually no sleights or angle issues and there are endless ideas you can come up with, and it all fits in your wallet or shirt pocket, I use mine to give away my business card or a predicted card, I let the spectator remove the card themselves, very powerful. |

Guys, that we have any here who would think much less post that their convenience and some vague notion of "advancing the craft" somehow overrides a creators control over their work and right to sell it (or not) as they see fit is disturbing. Both the gaff and the applications (which are obvious to any student of card or closeup magic) are worth exploring though not so sure about credits and manufacturing rights being up for grabs. Does "oh look I used the principle using the back of card to make my sandwich effect work" deserve crediting or publication? Not IMHO but then again I presume both Dan and Jerry have explored using multiple such gaffs in their "Ace Assembly" routines, Dingle's Illusion Aces, Hamman's Your Signed Card etc. by now as well.
If Jerry and Dan can (and seemingly have) come to an arrangement that works for them - all the better for them and for us. I wish them both the best. Dan/Jerry - what's your feeling on taking custom orders for cards and blades?

@dave - initially you described the Switchblade as "very disappointing" (page two of this discussion). You subsequently changed your tune in subsequent posts. What changed your opinion? I don't have the JS version. Are they truly identical?
I stand by my original position. I'm not saying Dan shouldn't credit Jerry with having the idea before him, but I don't think he should have to give up making the Switchblade just because he happened to design something himself that someone had coincidentally already conceived. How many times has that happened in the history of the human race? You can't imagine winning the lottery because the odds are so low, and yet people do win the lottery. Coincidences happen and I don't think Dan should feel he has to stop producing the Switchblade because of it. Dave has already pointed out that it's not necessarily the tool, but what you do with it. I agree. I can buy a pack of cards from five different manufacturers and assuming they're all of similar 'quality' (however you judge that), deck A isn't going to make you a better magician than deck B, C or D. The tuition DVD you get with the Switchblade gives an amateur/ hobbyist (such as myself) a running head-start. That alone is worth buying Dan's version. Personally, I don't see any ethical reason why Dan cannot continue with Switchblade. Of course, Dan could be making a very shrewd move and using this thread as a way to move the sales of Switchblade along a bit Jude |

HJ, I was hoping you'd ask about a direct side-to-side variant with the cutout for straight out rather than fanned display.

I hit the button too soon, yes, I have them side by side and they are identical, and I feel that Dan came up with this on his own,it's not the first or last time this will happen, also I hope they both make and sell them, I do not think Jerry has a patent or any legal rights, however this, as I tried to say earlier is a different kind of community where we acknowledge those who have created or influenced etc. That has been done and with class and dignity by Dan,Now please buy it from JS and do the basic or from Dan and learn a lot more, either way it is an awesome packet trick,

Sorry Jonathan, I have no idea what you're talking about! :Switchblade is my first and only magic trick purchase and experience of this (for me) *new* hobby! One of my Sons bought me a birthday present from Tesco's: Marvin's Magic card tricks or something. It had rigged cards, a 'wizard' deck that was slightly tapered at one end and a little booklet with a load of magic tricks to perform. Some of the tricks were really effective and it got me hooked. I then looked online for more and came across magicstore.co.uk and Switchblade. I bought it 'cause I like card tricks and the video looked cool. So when it comes to knowing all the lingo, I'm totally ignorant I'm afraid! By the way ace - loving the rubber chicken in your avatar |

I've actually enjoyed reading all of the craziness over this one effect. Not sure why! I do wonder if it is a big coincidence that these two gimmicks are identical but he did the right thing by contacting the original creator. Kudos to you for doing that. The funny thing is I have no idea what this effect is and I think I want it! Can anyone clue me in as to the routines, etc? I'll do a search too.
By the way, someone questioned why Dave changed his tune from being dissapointed to being supportive. As I recall, Dave stated he was dissapointed because he thought he was getting a completely different gimmick then he already owned from the original creator. What he praises are the new routines that were created. Thanks! |

If I may make a suggestion if you choose to want to keep selling this, Dan: Just make a sticker saying briefly the credit of the gimmick and slap it on the case before they ship.

He teaches his favorite classic force as well. All this with Dan Harlan's detailed instruction. It does not matter if your a card person or not, Dan teaching as with all his stuff is in detail and he stops along the way to make sure you know where you should be at in different parts of the routines. This is not a one trick pony, Dan also shows how you can go into another trick when someone asks the big question that packet tricks don't hold up too and that is, "Can you show me another?" using the same cards and the same gimmick. Lot's of information on this video and if you watch it close you will learn a lot even if you are a master card person. For me the sexy card move of showing five cards then four in one of the routines is just awesome. Hope this helps --Floyd

Yeah the biddle trick variation he does where he shows five and visually one card disappears is the highlight for me. It got me doing the biddle trick again which has been fun.

Dan Harlan has done it again. The most controversal magician alive today has opened yet another unknown door to that special passage that Dan dissapears into once in a while, only to later reappear with a new effect that defies logic, and distorts reality for all those who witness it. SwitchBlade will take your card magic on a rollercoaster ride of awesomeness! If you aint got SwitchBlade....You aint playing with power!
Okay, enough of that. Here is my review in a nutshell. Dan is funny as usual, and enjoyable to watch. The method and the gimmick are both simple to operate, giving you more time to work on the routines Dan provides. Or, come up with your own routines. The handling can be a little tricky, but practice will fix that in time. I really do love this effect. It's very practical, can be performed anywhere, anytime. No clothing restrictions, and no bad angles to worry about. Happy NewYear!

To the reviewers here:
Is the gimmick made of card stock, or something more durable? I.E., is it prone to aging and/or breaking down over time as a playing card would? |
