CMH - especially when someone googles it on their phone and tries to show me their version (badly) 10 minutes later.

I hate doing the needle thru balloon. After probably 100 live performances , I still can't believe I push that needle thru the balloon. I always pop a few first (kids go nuts and I play to that). But when it gets down to it, I still sweat when I actually do it. I just play along like it is part is the act but I really am nervous.

Anytime I find myself doing a trick that I don't particularly care for I try to come up with a bit to make it more interesting, amusing, entertaining...you get the idea. I used to hate "Lazy man's" untill I found a good bit to use with it, now it kills!

I myself love sponge balls so I cannot relate the experience necessarily, but I have other exceedingly basic and simple effects that outshine even the "best" pieces in the show. A funny story to relate to the experience of SPONGE KONG: Any fan of Eugene Burger that has followed his career knows that he has a love/hate relationship with sponge balls. There is a story he tells quite often regarding them. Over the course of his career he has put them into his show, taken them out, put them back in, etc. He was hired to do a show on a yacht and did not bring the sponge balls, and when the booking client asked him, "But you brought those red balls, right?" He said, "No." The client was clearly disappointed. As Eugene puts it - sometimes they are bulky and a pain to worry about and prep, but on the other hand, you can get women to scream with they open their hand and find a bunch of sponge balls inside. Anyway - I am not sure I have any pieces that I perform just because an audience likes it. I too try to perform things that I like so that I also genuinely enjoy the feeling and wonderment that the audience gets from the magic. |

I can't find a single reason to hate a trick that you do. There are hundreds of thousands of effects to choose from, why do something you hate. Now, as a dealer, I used to do tricks I didn't care for, because I was showing it to my students. Dealers can't make a judgement on an effect because someone may like what you hate.
