Is there some gimimck or method that would allow me to cause the water in a glass to tilt while the glass remained upright? Thanks

One way is to tilt the room 40 degrees or so. You could give the show in a jumbo jet and work out an arrangement with the pilot. OK, so that's not practical for most of us. If the liquid could be milk instead of water, you could tilt the glass a few times and note the way the level of the milk tilts towards to opening of the glass. Then hold the milk still and vertical and have a plastic insert painted white rise up (Invisible Thread) and make the milk seem to tilt. This could be accompanied by you saying... "Woah! Did anyone feel the room tilt just then? Someone should check on the pilot to see what he's been drinking."

Plastic would be a possibility. Are there any sites which sell a gimmick like this? Thanks!
