Very nice! I love seeing them together - I hope Jamy continues doing Craig's show. It seems like a good thing for magic...the little banter before he started working makes it seem like Craig really enjoys having him on.
By the way, this would be the second time that Craig has indicated that Jamy made him soil himself. Great presentation!

I never got to see Jamy Ian Swiss in person, but with all that I have read about him, I was very disappointed in his choice of material and his handling of Gaeton Bloom's Intercessor gimmick.
It just seems like the performers do not hold their appearence high enough to practice the magic they expect to perform. I have seen better performances from many of these magicians at close-up conventions and they come off professional and know exactly what they are doing. Then they get a television performance the fidget all over themeselves. What's up! |

Have to agree in some respects, he did seem pretty fidgety. Kept reaching into various pockets "looking" for something.
The card in ice didn't seem to hit home with the audience, Craig seemed to be trying to salvage the bit. Personally, it left me cold, no pun intended. Another example of an amazing trick but with nothing for an audience to relate to. It just became a puzzle IMHO. |

Jamy is indeed great in person. What's interesting is the size of Craig's audience is smaller than some of the audiences he works for at the Castle! Must be the TV cameras.

Wmhegbli/videoman I think part of the problem is that performing at an odd angle, like side by side with the spectator behind a desk, and the spectator is an A personality and is more in command than the magician factors. Also the pressure when millions are watching also plays a part, plus this is live to tape and there's only a single chance to nail it. I remember the Letterman close-up magic week when several convention favorite magician's magicians were featured and it seemed to me that four out of five of them were shakey and/or choked. All things considered I think both of Jamy's appearances gave a good impression of sleight-of-hand to millions of viewers. That's probably why he was invited for a second appearance.

Yes, you are probably right about the odd performing angle. Didn't mean to get on Jamy's case about it. He is super-talented and super-knowledgeable and has forgotten more than I'll ever know, truly one of the great pros working today. I hope he is invited back many more times.

Personally, I think Jamy kicked but. He handles the situation with the one on one smart ass constant barrage from the host ( all in great fun ) better than most. That is no easy task, It's not easy fending off and having combacks that are entertaining and not odd and confrontational. The magic was very well executed and as for choice, we can talk to the end of time about what effects would be the best for the situation, bla bla bla. Fact is the routines performed worked great. Ask some lay people who saw the show what they thought, afterall that is the target right? He's not a convention magic convention trying to wow the every critical magic community. The people I speak with thought he was awesome. Great job Swiss Man!!

Jamy Ian Swiss is one of my all time favorite people. Everything he does is just great. He makes a living in a very difficult field.

To borrow a bit from Teddy Roosevelt, "It's not the critic who counts, it's the man who's actually in the arena."
I thought he did a wonderful job. How many of us could have done better? |

Arena? Is that a question of whether the lion enjoyed the meal or whether the lion will be sickened by the meal? Dogs and chocolate... someone has to keep a watch for such things.

I'm a big fan of Jamy's and I think he did very well in an extremely high-pressure situation, but I'm fascinated by the fact that it is so taboo to say anything even slightly critical of the performance or even to discuss what could have been improved. I don't think I've ever seen magicians so sensitive about a pro's performance before. Remember when Chris' Cirque show opened in Vegas? There was no problem at all with everyone, and I mean everyone, piling on with criticisms of Chris' show (even, Mr. Wayne, by people who have never headlined a Vegas show) and it was totally acceptable. So, I'm curious, why the double standard?

I don't see any double standard or sensitivity. In Angel's case the pile-on, as you call it, was a majority opinion, with only a few fans of his work. In the Swiss case, of the few posts, a majority enjoyed his work and a few weren't so impressed. Nothing unacceptable and no double standard I can see, just a difference of majority opinion.

Oh my gosh, I got it. How many magicians does it take to change a light bulb?

I thought the magic was great, but perhaps more importantly, Jamy actually acted like a REAL PERSON! He talked to Craig like he was just a regular guest and had a lot of fun banter with him. I'm sure Jamy did a lot better than ANYONE posting on this thread could have done! Sure we can all sit back in our armchairs and nitpick about how this or that could've been better, but the fact is, who cares? We should be celebrating that Jamy was on TV representing magic in a very positive way on a network show. Just something to think about...

Again, I thought he did a great job too, especially in terms of patter and personality. But I've seen more than one person get shot down hard (flamed) just by bringing up something that could have gone a little better. Yet Blaine has had entire specials on tv that many in the community publicly trashed and no one circled the wagons for him, quite the opposite. That's called a double-standard in my book. I don't have anything negative to say about Jamy's performance; I liked it a lot, but I think that people should be able to talk about it openly without fear of getting attacked.
