Out of “My cards are magical and I'm gonna prove it”, I tend to stay away from characterizing items except if it is absolutely necessary to justify the modus-operandi.
Anyway, here you have a routine that would actually be pointless without any dramatization. The slasher movies seem to me to be like an appropriated modernization of the serial killers plots that have been around for at least two centuries, with “Jack The Ripper” being perhaps the first globally known account about a serial killer. In this PDF, I give you the basic patter I use. I encourage you to feel free to expand it with your own ideas, thus making this routine your own. EFFECT: You display a packet of blue backed cards as you offer to explain to the audience your own remake of the “Friday the 13th” movie... with just a bunch of cards! Each card represents a character from the movie. First, you introduce the Jack of Spades which symbolizes the killer. You explain that a legend says that a young boy tragically drowned in a lake during summer camp because the counselors didn't pay attention. You then show that blue waves have magically appeared onto its face. But the legend also says that the boy did not actually die and still lives in the wood, waiting for his revenge. A regular Jack of Spades appears on top of the packet. As the story goes, our main characters (face cards symbolizing the counselors) die one by one (their backs become red). The “final girl”, our heroine, is knocked senseless by the killer (its back becomes red) who then goes away (the card is placed into your pocket but still in view) as his work seems to be over. But the girl is only hurt (its back turns blue again). Trying to escape from the dark woods, she discovers one corpse, and another one, and another - she quickly realizes that all her friends are dead! When she finally gets out the woods and goes to the police, she's immediately able to tell them who did it. It was HIM. It could only be HIM; the boy from the legend! You tap the cards with the Jack of Spades and turn the red backed cards face down to reveal that on the back of each card, a letter has appeared: J-A-S-O-N. His name was Jason... This routine uses only one standard gaff that 95% of you will already have. The set-up and the modus-operandi are easy to remember and at the end of the routine, every card on the table is examinable. The routine uses very basic sleights so you can really concentrate on your acting skills. 1st edition 2010; 11 pages, 8 photos. For the moment it is available through me for 7$ at r.czaja@libertysurf.fr OR WIN ONE OF FIVE FREE COPIES by answering this question: In which movie of the F13 series do the protagonists play a card game in which the Jack of Spades symbolizes Jason? I'll give free copies to the first five E-MAILS (!!!) with the correct answers. Best regards, Raphael.

This is a really, really good packet trick. I love it. Even people who don't normally like packet tricks, but like scary movies, will probably enjoy this as the presentation is great. And, like a lot of Raphael's stuff, a lot of magic for very little effort.

Thanks Cameron!
By the way, if you read the ad, you get the basic idea of what's happening during the effect but I should mention the presentation in the pdf is indeed more developed. More feedbacks: "This is a REALLY cool effect! [...] You definitely have a WINNER!" - Vlad (from the Magic Café) "I really like this one - it's a well structured, direct effect, based on a great movie. [...] Your presentation manages to successfully capture the atmosphere of that movie." - Peter Duffie "I am going to definitely use this one and in fact, it's going right into my performing repertoire! [...] I am sure a lot of people will like this trick." - Andrew Loh If you're a respectable and/or respected reviewer, you may get one free copy, just PM me.

No there isn't.
I give enough details and clues in the ad to give you an idea of what it looks like and eventually the cards you need to perform it. I tend to think that you also pay for that (and the presentation in this case). As a counterpoint, I tried to keep a low and fair price. And the testimonials may help you to make your choice. I know one may think of testimonials but I don't think these respectable magicians would like to put their name and reputation on what they would consider as a bad trick. Nevertheless, if someone decides to put a video on youtube or another website and it looks good, I'll let him do so.

Thanks to Raphael for sending me a copy. I like the routine, but I do have a couple of concerns. First let me say that I like the plot very much. So many people are familiar with the Friday the 13th franchise, I think the storyline has a very good hook to it. It should appeal to many people. As far as my concerns, one is perhaps an omission in the routine. I would assume that you wouldn't want to leave the "blue waves" Jack tabled after revealing it, but there's no mention of what to do with it. Ideally, I think you'd want to return it to the packet and ditch it somehow after the next Jack reveal.
My other concern is the repetition of the mechanics. With 6 "victims", you're repeating the same sequence 6 times. I would worry that the deceptiveness will be diminished. It's a little like not wanting to repeat an effect for someone. The storyline patter does provide distraction, so it's not as if the spectators are totally focused on your actions, but at the same time, you are trying to draw attention to the back color changes. Admittedly, I tend to overthink things at times, so many people might not give this issue a second thought. Bottom line, this concern would not keep me from recommending this, thanks to the creativity of the plot, and the logic and lack of contrivance with which the effects tie in with the storyline. |

About your concerns:
It's logical to leave the "drowned" JS on the table because this is the killer as a child. And then later, we see him as an adult so for me, it completely logical to see the other card on top. Also, that's because you repeat the same moves that it becomes so innocent. People get used to it and it's logical to introduce each character the same way. Frankly, I don't see it as a magic trick. This is a story with magical moments in it. The storyline patter is not a distraction, this is the core of the routine. You don't try to fool them. It's not an "in your face" trick. This is a quiet moment in which you're setting up a certain mood with your voice and the cards are a simple but visual illustration of the story you're telling. I understand what you mean though. For example, I know that among magicians, some may be worried about doing five elmsley counts in the same trick but personally I don't mind about it and I don't get why people would catch you. And again, in this case, the magical moments are a bonus, not the main attraction. You don't try to challenge them. I hope it helps.

Me overthinking again? Perhaps. Thanks for your further explanations re: "repetition". Yes, that was helpful. |

The appearance is not negated in my opinion.
See that as a transposition or monte effect. The card is supposed to be here, but here is another card and the card is actually there. By the way, thanks for the review. Best, Raph.

You may also make it "appear" later, when you introduce the final girl and the confrontation between the two of them.
It's not only about overthinking. It's about considering that the method is more important that the patter IN THIS PARTICULAR TRICK. It's like the woman cut in half effect. The more recent versions have extra convincers like moving feet or mirrors... but a lot of magicians still use the basic version that everybody knows, including the audience! If you use the cheesy version (you know, the pink and green box with silver stars stickers onto it) and just say "I'm going to cut this lady in half", while doing an arthritic choregraphy like I still often see... yes this will suck. But if you paint your cheesy box in black and your mise-en-scene involves a tragic love story during the 18th century, you have a chance to be more successful even without the modern extra convincers. If it was just about a color changing packet, I would use a different method.
