Hello everyone. Has anyone heard of a sleight called the Panoramic Shift?
A friend of mine showed it to me and it looked like a good way of controlling a card that was returned to the middle back to the top. I'm curious to know who originated this sleight. Thanks in advance.

The Panoramic Shift is the brain child of the one and only Jerry Andrus. It can be found on page 34 of volume 1 of his book entitled "Andrus Card Control".
Hope this helps. Take care, Dorian Rhodell |

A few years ago, while playing with the Panoramic shift, I invented a brand-new card control that was much easier and cleaner than the PS! It was truly thrilling to be such a brilliant pioneer, breaking new ground in an age old art...
As it turns out, I had "discovered" the "New Thumb Slide", as refined by Steve Draun from Hugards "Thumb Slide" (More Card Manipulations No. 3). Steve Beam was the one to break the sad news to me. Fortunately, I have long been aware that there is nothing new under the sun, which is why I was asking Beam in the first place. In any event, if you like the Panoramic Shift, you'll LOVE the New Thumb Slide; complete instructions can be found in "Secrets Draun From the Underground". Regards, Thomas Wayne

Richard Kaufman published a handling which provided a dynamic cover in Cardworks, but this book, as well, is difficult to locate.

I have never seen anyone but Jerry himself do the PS well. Perhaps it is just too idiosyncratic.

Jerry only uses bridge size cards, which makes some sleights easier. I learned the Panoramic Shift from Jerry some 25 years ago and it has served me well in my "Ambitious Pass Routine". I tell the audience that I have to caress the front edge of the deck with my fingertips to "make the magic happen". This serves to cover the slow movement and works very well.

Like a great many things in magic, it can be optically perfect, but is best done under misdirection - or rather, direction.
John Carney alludes to this (in a general context) in Carneycopia's preface, and I found this to be an outstanding tip.
