Quick question,
I have Cardini's beautiful act on video and I am very interested in the old methods of producing lit cigarettes. I don't want to give any methods away, but I know they all come from the opening of his j*****. I wanted to know what device was used to keep at least 10 cigarettes lit and being able to steal them one by one. I think only someone who has the act on tape will have a answer to this. thanks |

There are cigarette droppers around. There is one explained in 'Routined Manipulation I'. He suggests pinning it under the jacket, or waistcoat if you are wearing tails (like Cardini).
A quick search gave me the following sites: http://www.martinka.com/auction/XcAPViewItem.asp?ID=393 http://www.spectram.com/Spectramweb/Pyro......pper.htm http://www.magicshop-m.com/catalog/tm1.html The bottom link suggests 'Expert Cigarette Magic Made Easy' by Tom Mullica. Kevin |

Kevin- Thank you very much.
You have answered my question. I just wanted to know what he was using. Do these droppers hold around 10 or is it much less? |

It depends on the holder I think. The one drawn in 'Routined Manipulation I' looks like it can hold 8+ cigarettes... but obviously you wouldn't need to put that many in if your routine didn't require as much.

A kind lad, ya are! Do you know what the best version of a cig dropper is or should I make a new forum? |

I don't think that you're looking for a "Cigarette Dropper" as much as you are looking for a "Lit Cigarette Holder". If you can find a copy of Keith Clark's "Encyclopedia of Cigarette Tricks" (very old and maybe now out of print), you will find several holders for lit cigarettes. From that point it is a matter of customizing to your need. I'm sure that Cardini made his own holders. He did turn his own Billiard Balls, after all!
Cheers!

Wonderful information. Thanks for sharing it with us. Yes, cardini did spin his own billard balls so I am sure he designed his own droppers as well. I think the Mullica reference would be a good starting point for you.

Yes I just bought the Encyclopedia of Cigarette Magic today (Keith Clark) and it has pictures of about 10 different droppers. I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to have that in the jacket with a bird next to it? Do these have air holes to keep the cigarettes breathing so they stay lit?
If anyone uses these or knows someone who does what is a good dropper? And cardini did make his own. I was in Tannen's Magic Shop last week and I met a magician who said he had a dropper of Cardini's but sold it to Copperfield years ago. Thanks a bunch guys |

I have "Expert Cigarette Magic" by D. Deeven and it is very good. It has information on cigarette holders as well as covering productions, vanishes and acquitments.
Hope this helps |

Just keep in mind that cig manipulation has not been performed much these days because of the changing feelings towards smoking and mainly because of the very stringent fire codes no in most places of which you might perform your act.
I am not saying to do learn cig manipulation and to not perform with it, just saying to look into it ahead of time at the venues you may want to perform at and see what their regulations are.

I didn't know that Cardini turned his own billard balls. If Cardini were alive today, would he be using wooden balls or silicone? And why? Did Cardini use some hand preparation creme or oinment? What do you guys think?

Cardini would have certainly still been spinning his own balls. He was very good at it and had a technique for doing them that was unlike anyone else's. He got used to the weight and feel and could customize the balls and colors to his liking.
He also made all his own holders and clips and body load gimmicks. He surely was an inventor and I think he felt he had more control that way. Considering that Cardini used gloves for most of his act, the preparation was not always on the hands but on the gloves instead.

I have always wanted to manipulate cards with gloves and I just bought some. I find that I can't even spread the cards sfter they're produced. I tried putting manipulators hand lotion on them but that didn't work. I wanted to know what gloves are used to manipulate cards and what is a good way to prepare them so it is easier to do the productions and splits?

Ganson recommends licking the fingers of the gloves, and that allows the cards to stick more and they become easier to manipulate. Manipulators lotion does nothing but ruin your gloves.

There are actually gloves on the market that have rubber areas sewn in on the fingers and palm areas of the gloves. I believe that Denny Haney carries them at Denny and Lee Magic Shop in Baltimore. I have not seen them first hand, but have heard good things about them.

It is possible to enter wearing gloves, do a few things with them on, and then remove them, the excuse being that you entered with them on, and are now removing them

Of course. Many performers have done moves and manipulation sequences with the gloves on and then took them off and transitioned into something else. In fact, you could do cards with the gloves on, then take the gloves off and do split fans. It works nicely and helps add a touch of flair to the act.

Did Cardini use a electrical method to light his cigarettes in the tank or were they lighted outside the tank in his hand?
