Hi everyone,

I know about Vent Haven which I hope to go, but are there any other ones? I live in California. I'm brand new and trying to expose myself to what's out there.

Thanks.

There was one in Las Vegas I believe, but I don't recall the name of it, I'm sure someone here will know.

We are going to have a Birthday Bash celebrating the 5th anniversary of Ventriloquist Central. It is going to be a great time and will be in the Boston area. We have already lined up some great entertainment and lectures so check it out!!

I got to meet Dan at the one convention I attended, and as much as I'm sure I would enjoy meeting him again, it would be the figures I'd be the most interested in meeting (and take no offense Dan, this would be true of anyone I met who had any figures, whether it was a few or a lot).

We NEED to get something started annually on the WEST COAST!! It's hard for some of us out here to make it all the way back to the mid-west or east coast. I can't fathom why L.A., San Fran., or San Diego doesn't have a vent conference. BUMMER!!!

There aren't as many vents as there are magicians or clowns, so that might be part of why there aren't many conferences. Also, putting on a decent convention requires tons of planning and work. I've been involved in a couple of clown conventions and it's a team effort because there's just so much to do. Plus, clowns tend to form clubs, so there are at least a few people available to whom the main organizer can delegate responsibilities. If I were to try to put together a vent conference, I'd start with a one or two day regional get together. But before I started doing any organizing, I'd try to see if there was enough interest to warrant the effort.

It's too bad that Las Vegas one is no ore, that gave people out west something a little closer.

I imagine even putting on a get-together requires a bit of doing. I got to attend one of Bill Boley's get-togethers a few years before he passed, and it all went very smoothly, but I can imagine, behind the scenes getting ready for it took a lot to make it that way.

Hahaaa, well, it looks like I may get to see you and the figures as I went ahead and took advantage of the early bird special and signed up.
Hopefully, nothing will come up between now and then to keep me from making it.

The idea of smaller regional vent conferences is a good one, but difficult to pull off. As David said, there aren't as many vents as other types of variety acts. That means lower attendance, so profitablitity becomes a factor. Magic dealers are everywhere, but the vent community has a smaller dealer base. That means you wouldn't have as big a tradeshow or marketplace. Then the acts and workshops that would actually create the draw are a much smaller pool to pull from. There is a limited number of professional vents, and they are usually busy earning a living. Some don't want to perform in front of other vents since jokes and routines get stolen.

You may want to check with One Way Street to see if they are doing any conferences in your area. I know they do several near mine, and combine vent with puppetry and magic for ministry work.

On the national convention - VentHaven is the one to attend. You've got the biggest stars - (Dunham and Fator in 2011) and the names, DeMarr, Horn, Trefzeger, Groves, Wade and many more. The workshops are incredible and the vendors are all there. If you can attend only one - (sorry Dan) - it is the one to attend! If you can attend two - I'll see you in Boston too!

Yes, the convention is definitely the one to attend if you can. I'm really feeling like I'd like to go again, but it's just not possible for me this year, so I'm glad Dan's got this thing going on this year, it's only a few hours away from me and much more easily doable for me, and cheaper (which is what makes it doable over the convention).
It's too bad regional get-togethers aren't more doable for most for all the reasons Tom mentioned, because to me, they have a more comfortable and informal feel to them.

Well I would hope you would be attending the birthday bash.....(I know there should be a much more clever response to you saying you're attending both, but I couldn't come up with it, so I'll understand if I don't get a rimshot here).

In the old days, the International Brotherhood of Ventriloquists would piggyback their convention with the IBM convention, a little mini-con within the convention. As interest in ventriloquism has had something of a resurgence, perhaps this could be done successfully at a regional SAM or IBM convention. I'm sure there are some magicians looking to add some variety to their acts that might generate attendance at a vent lecture and sales at a vent supply booth. Ax is located in California I think. He might be inclined to set-up at a convention out west.

If Axtell sets up a conference, I'd go.

It's really hard for me, as aspiring vent, to develop out here in California. There really isn't much support for me. Thanks for all your comments.

If it's tough out in CA, you should try my neck of the woods - hopeless. That's been a big plus of the net, lot's of ways to at least be able to communicate with other vents, find resources, find figures, etc.

I can remember when I started - internet?, what internet?, it didn't even exist yet, at least not for the home user.
Trying to get my first REAL figure (as opposed to a vent doll out of one of the catalog stores) - the only way that happened is having remembered seeing a tiny ad in the back of a Popular Mechanics for a place that sold stuff, which turned out to be Maher Studios. Just getting their catalog opened up a big new world, and then as a result, joining the NAAV and getting "Newsy Vents" - wow, it was ventriloquism heaven. Sure a far cry and pales in comparison to what's available now, but then, it was like finding a gold mine.

But I guess I digress a bit, sorry. I imagine there's lots of us in the same position, there may be more people doing vent than most non-vents realize, but we're still not so common in most places that it's easy to get together. I guess really, all those of us in this position can do is be thankful we have the access to a forum like this, email lists, and email to be in touch with other vents and find information, etc. Of course, there's nothing like a get-together or a convention for really fueling the fire - I know it sure worked for me when I went to the Boley event and again when I attended the convention, but in lieu of that, we're definitely much better off than we were back when I started.

Well, I live in Central MA, and work out of Boston, so if anyone wants to get together for coffee, or practice, I'm available.

I think this board is a fantastic medium, and I'm glad I found it.
