What else can one do Magic wise with a Hat, besides produce things from under the hat? I thought about doing a chop cup routine using a hat, but what else?

A hat, borrowed or otherwise can and has been used for many things. Doing a chop type routine with coins and a brim up hat has been done. Using the hat as a holder for c/s and c/s/b has been done. I recall a hat used to setup the pheonix cards, also someone did a rising card out of a hat. From pedestal to basket, and penetrations to vanishes the hat has its place in the performer's wardrobe and routining.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Mark,
Try doing the rising card from hat with a borrowed hat. It gets a great reaction, especially since the card rises away from you and towards the audience! Bob

Howdy, since were talking about hats, has anyone ever seen an older Tonight Show spot with a guy who came out doing a routine with his hat his jacket, and messing around with the mike,he didn't utter a word, you have to see it,to do it justice, very cool.
Anyone know who it was,I didn't catch it. Derek

Thanks for the ideas, I have been to the trickwithhats sight and have a few hat juggling tricks already... Right now I use the hat for a production, I was looking for other stuff to do with it!
Keep the ideas coming!

Do yourself a favor and buy "An Evening With Charlie Miller". You can get it from Magic Inc. There are some of the greatest magic lessons in print in that book, and one of them is a chink a chink type effect with two hats and some balled up napkins. The ending is the production of full beer mugs and other things! Trust me, you need to check this out!

How about turning your hat into a "Foo-Can"? You could pour water into your hat and then wear it for the remainder of your show and at the end of your act, pour the water out. You could even pour water into your hat and then later pour milk from your hat. You got me to thinkng about doing that myself, Thanks for the idea.

Patrick Page hints at a sponge-ball routine with a hat. It's a good idea. He talks about it on the sponge-ball video.
It is like a chop cup routine with a hat instead.

Try this:
You need a hat (I used a vintage top hat), a letter opener, magician´s wax and a deck of cards. Place small piece of wax on one side of letter opener, which of course you never allow to be seen. Have spectator choose a card and place it back in deck. Identify where card is using your own method. "Stab" letter opener into deck, securing chosen card with wax. Hold deck over hat then allow it to drop in. Come out with selected card on letter opener. It´s visual. Regards.

I know you mentioned that you already knew some productions of objects under the hat, but don't let that disuade you from checking out Paul Gertner's Triple Die-lema.
It's a great routine that goes from a Benson bowl type routine, followed by "two in the hand, one in the pocket", followed by the production of some HUGE dice from underneath the hat. Killer killer routine. Paul

There's a trick on Jim Pace's Visu-antics DVD where he reaches into a baseball cap and his arm disappears. It's a pretty neat effect.

I did see that guy. A small Italian guy with a big nose. He was hilarious. He did do one trick where his arm went through the mic stand when his thumb was stuck in the sleeve button hole. It was great. Unfortunately, I don't remember his name either. I'd like to know who he was too though. You can make a sort of boomerang hat. Make it fly around you. This is a great applaud stretcher. I've also done a Zombie type routine with a hat. I removed my jacket and used that to make the hat float like a zombie ball. Dan Sylvester gets a lot of use out of his hat. His is a large hat so more is possible but you might want to check some of his acts out for ideas. Ron Jaxon |
