I knew you guys were Star Wars fans!
I too think that Lucas got so big that no one could have told him off ("What George? Midichlorians? Are you NUTS?!" ), which is not a good thing in Movie making... But that's just my opinion. Too bad he did not simplify the characters and settings, it makes episodes 4, 5 and 6 seem very "small" in scope sometimes (but better acted and focused, story wise). He had too much to live up to with 20 years of expectations by them "fanboys" I guess... I believe he should've just concentrated on Obi Wan, Amidala, Anakin, Yoda and Palpatine... The whole lot of the other Jedis and other characters just took away focus from the storytelling. Have them there but don't focus too much on them. Imho, Count Dooku and General Grevious' roles should've just been taken up by Darth Maul. That way he could be the "Vader" of the prequels. Anakin should've fought Darth Maul then found out about Palpatine... Continuity would be better. There would be more focus. But alas, what could've been... As it is, looking back at it in sequence, it becomes messy in the mind of the fans and casual audiences as it goes on, a lot goes unanswered... What of the other planets? What of Jar Jar? What of the cloning planet? What happened to ALL the other characters? And when did them cuddly Ewoks become so powerful? Well, I heard it's showing in 3D in 2012. (Then the world ends... )

To be fair though my devotion wanned after Empire, although I am still a pretty good Next Gen Star Trek geek. I have to admit though I was just of the age when Star Wars came out to enjoy the movie just for the movie, not really much going on in my head sci fi wise with the exception of Doctor Who back then. Telling such an epic story, and making each movie stand alone is a Herculean task. It can almost not be done. As for Jar Jar (how many r's in his name?) I thought if he was just used less he would have been fine. I don't know if anyone mentioned it earlier or not but there wer racial implications and people offended with the charecter. Have you seen the Family Guy "Blue Harvest" DVD? It is the Star Wars movie done by the Family Guy crew. Also they did Empire I think it is called "Something, Something Dark Side". If you have not seen these and are a Star Wars fan you must simply watch them. If you are not a Family Guy fan and are a Star Wars fan you will be a Family Guy fan when you are done watching them. The last one is either out soon or out now for Jedi. They are nothing short of HILARIOUS.

Your ability to perceive and/or control that field is determined by the level of midichlorians in your system. We keep getting stories about Jedis and stories based on "what happens next." You know what I'd like to see? Yoda's story. I want to see a story about how this little guy discovered the Jedi in himself and rose to the level of Jedi master. Let's not forget that Leia is a Skywalker too. Luke even said; "you have these powers too." I'd so like to see a story with Leia's Jedi powers coming to the fore.

And so far, not a peep or squeal of lovecraftian delight about midichlorians having their own agenda?

HAN SHOT FIRST!!!!!!!!!
Most of the stuff from the first three where taken from myths, old films and such. Even down to some camera shots.

I think midichlorians and The Force was the Lucas equivalent of Disney's "Peter Pan" qualification of requiring 'fairy dust' to fly.

Why use chopstick lightsabers?
Just float your fruit like Anakin did with Amidala... (I know, that sounds wrong... ) And I too would love to see Yoda's backstory...

Yes they are. They are very different from the original trilogy (like I said before, George is too much in love with CG) and lack substance but as far as story goes, they are ok. Not great by any means, but ok.

Yes, the "prequel" trilogy is worth watching. The trouble with them, as taught to me by a student of film, is that George Lucas fell more in love with technology then he did with the story he was trying to tell.
When you're telling a story in a movie, you have to have the proper priorities. In order, they ought to be: 1. Theme 2. Character 3. Plot 4. Setting 5. Spectacle The original Star Wars Trilogy, as has been discussed many places, was based on ancient myths and grand themes. It had a wonderful set of characters from the dreamy young man and the feisty damsel in distress, to the brash mercenary and his unique sidekick. You had the two droids who went along for the ride and commented on everything while bickering with each other, and you had the wise sages (first Obi-Wan Kenobi and then Yoda) who taught the dreamy young hero how to finally conquer not only the evil without but the evil within. When it came time to do the "prequels," George Lucas was so in love with technology that could give him spectacle above all things that he used it to the extreme. He took that list and turned it upside down. Lucas himself has stated that he had a goal to see how fast (i.e., complex) he could make things before they became incomprehensible. Thus, sequences which include special visual effects (the pod race, chase and battle sequences) are too long. Remember, the original Star Wars was just two hours long, 123 minutes. Empire was 129, and Jedi was 136. By contrast, the "prequels" are 136, 142, and 140 minutes respectively. That increased length is CGI and sound effects. As one website writer put it, "CGI works better as a tool on a canvas rather than as the entire canvas." It seems Lucas changed his viewpoint from an interview in the 1980s when he said, “Special effects are just a tool. A means of telling a story. A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing.” So, focusing on spectacle first and then settings (the digital backlot, as ILM called it), the prequels get pretty boring. Lucas wasn't able to create truly compelling characters (Padme never really "did it" for me the way Princess Leia did), there weren't nearly as many memorable lines out of the "prequels" as the original trilogy, and the only theme was the always lovely music of John Williams. Like mvmagic said, the plots in the "prequels" were OK. I just think they were flat and mostly unimpressive when it came to the things that matter. Look at that list again. Special effects are easily topped, but a great theme and great characters will stand forever. That's why the original Star Wars Trilogy is the best. That's what I think, anyway. Carrie |
