Carrie,
People are stealing all over the world at this, and every minute. It directly impacts on your life, even if they don't steal from you. You are paying a higher price for every purchase you make, to cover this thieving. Can you state a single impact other people's legal fornication has on you beyond your moral outrage or personal distaste? |

It is of course unlawful to sell someone else's intellectual property. It is also unlawful to give it away. I know we all do it, I don't claim to be the paragon of virtue in this discussion. But be aware that it is still unlawful, you can't decide; "Well, they're not offering this, so it's OK." The distribution rights are owned by the copyright owner. Period.

That being said, I do NOT think that applies to the distinction Carrie is trying to establish. What she is doing does however, show she seems more akin to those who will twist things to fit their own predetermined biases, and hen retroactively cite that as the source for said biases, rather than actually basing her beliefs on that which she claims is the source.

Actually you can't say "We all make copies and give them away" I don't and I would hazard to guess I'm not in the majority here but some of us don't do that at all. The majority here shouldn't copy and give a way that is something that can't be refuted.

"The person recognized by the law as having the ultimate control over, and right to use, property as long as the law permits and no agreement or Covenant limits his or her rights."
http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/owner Here's the thing, IF, say in the example of a cd with music on it, the artist retains "ownership" over the material on the cd, then the person who buys the cd simply cannot be said to "own" it. If there is anything limiting what you can do with that piece of property, and saying you can't put it in your computer, have the computer look at the bumps and pits on it, and make a record of that information, and then make it available to someone else certainly would be a limit, then you do NOT own the cd that you bought. So, can someone else own something you possess, that they can never take back, and you don't have a contract, or on going transaction with them, such as paying a rent on the property? Who owns the piece of property?

I own the physical CD. I can listen to it, sell it or give it away.
I do NOT own the intellectual information ON the CD. That is still owned by the copyright owner. And yes, I should be able to copy the CD to my computer, MP-3 device or anywhere I want for MY own personal purposes. I do NOT have the right to distribute the intellectual information on the CD to people who have not PAID for the CD.

Limits on what you can do with it. If you copy it for your own use, suddenly you are not allowed to give away the cd, at least not with being forced to do something to your other property, your computer.
