Man that was hard! I'd put Winch at the top of my list because of my great respect for everything he's done for ventriloquism and as a pioneer in Television, as well as voice over in general. Not to mention his monstrous talent!
Jimmy Nelson has to go on my list, too, because like Winch him and Danny O'day and Farfel were my very earliest influences from the time I was a small boy. In fact my first course in vent was Nelson's "Instant Ventriloquism." (Although the figure was a cheap Jerry Mahoney) I get three more, right? Let me give it more thought!

Okay, I need to ammend my list. I'm making #5 a 5a. & 5b. Have to add Terry Fator. My wife and I are going out to Vegas for our anniversary and staying at the Mirage. Got hold of Terry and he arranged for his secretary to get us discounted tickets as close to the stage as we wanted to be. We'll also be meeting with him.
I met Terry at VentHaven in 2008 and prior to that when he was showcasing for fairs in PA while still with Texas the band. What an extremely nice guy to go out of his way to make certain we were taken care of. I find the level of fellowship among ventriloquists to be so much greater than I ever did with magic. Makes me proud (and thankful) to be a vent! BTW - quick plug - You can meet and talk with Terry, Jeff, Nina, and so many of the favorite vents above at the ConVention in July. If you haven't planned on going - start saving and do it. I'm leaving a tour to be there this summer. Wouldn't miss it! Tom |

OK. Jeff Dunham is on my list after seeing him with his early performances. He was GOOD way back when he was getting started!

Wanlu,
What happened to Shari "Nina Conti" Lewis? |

Yes! God forgive me! Shari deserves a place of honor on my list! She blessed me when I was a kid, and then she did it again to my kids. So Shari gets a lots of love and a place on my list.

I love everybody on the lists above...everyone.
I do want to note that only one of the performers mentioned brought an actual heartfelt tear to my eye. That wonderful moment in the show "The Two and Only"...when Jay Johnson's original figure Squeaky was not cast in Soap. Ouch...so sweet and sad. |

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I really wanted to add my top 5.
I love all the greats past and present, but these 5 have particularly amazed me with their brilliance: - Ray Alan - Edgar Bergen - Dan Horn - Russ Lewis - Dick Weston |

I will list just one.
Edgar Bergen- He started the whole chain of inspiration that has given us so many talented ventriloquists around the world. I saw him perform the night that he died, and critics agreed that he was as good as ever.

Oh Man! What was that like, seeing that performance, then getting the word....never mind, I'm sure words can't describe it.

My two inspirations are Willie Tyler and Jay Marshall. Both took time out of their busy schedules to help and give me advice when I was a young kid back in the 70's.

My favorites among the living...
1. Jay Johnson--his approach to the art and the craft. Intertwining the technique into something beyond 2. Jimmy Nelson--without him, I would not be a ventriloquist. 3. Dave Strassman--because he took it in a different direction 4. Jeff Dunham--because he revived the popularity 5. Valentine Vox--I still have a tape of a HBO special of Valentine, left an impression. 5a. Peter Rich--for making me believe in the double voice stunt
I live on Facebook. Come visit me, I get lonely.

For originality, cleverness, and pure entertainment, I'll add John Prizzi and Stan Allen.
