I am a little confused. In some other threads, it was mentioned that certain routines are copyrighted and sometimes performance rights is mentioned.
Can you buy a DVD on sometyhing like cups and balls and perform for a profit the routines that they teach you or do you need to obtain performance rights? Thanks

If you paid for the DVD you can perform to your heart's content. Performance rights are usually sold with high-end illusions.

It's been discussed many times, and always seems to get a little more confusing each time. I'd ask to make sure what you were actually getting for your money, because it can vary from purchase to purchase.
For example, I recently purchased a play script. What I received was a digital copy with rights to perform it for as long as I wanted, but only as a “live” show, not for television or internet. I can make as many copies as I need for my troop, but can’t give a copy to anyone else. Things should be spelled out, and (as Jim stated) it’s more common with high-end stuff. Nobody will say anything if you use a thumb tip on national television, but doing a “bootlegged” Zig-Zag Lady is going to draw some serious heat! While Cups & Balls are a magic staple, copying somebody’s routine is approaching that line where I’d want to check. Is there anything on the DVD packaging that gives a clue? Is there anything you can change (even slightly) to make it yours?
...what if I could read your mind?
