Libraries will usually haver their programs on the same day of the week at same time. This help patrons remember that their is always something on Wednesdays at 10 am at the library.
If you try to change times it may hurt attendance. |

You are right most libraries around here hire you to perform at 6:00 or 700 pm so they can attract a family audience.

I perform at libraries throughout NJ, CT, PA, NY, & DE and usually book 2-3 a day Monday through Friday in the summer. I even book a few Saturdays. Times range from 10,10:30, 11, 2,3,3:30,6, or even 7 for me. Saturday bookings are usually 10:30 or 11 for morning and 2:00PM for afternoons.

This is my point of focus in booking library shows: I want to help the library sell what's important to them to their constitueents in a fun and unique way. In other words, I assist them by offering them a fun and unique marketing solution.
Please remember what librarians do: serve people who read books. Here' my secret weapon: http://www.axtell.com/bookpuppets.html I use "Bookie" to open the magic show, and to close the show by simply having a display of magic books that the libray has for rental (they all do). In closing, I explain to the kids and adults in attendance that I learned to perform magic by reading magic books when I was young, and they can too. Trust me, librarians LOVE THIS APPROACH. |

Is it actually productive to send out fliers to each of the library branches? I thought the best (only?) way to get booked is to get yourself listed with the main office of the library system that does the assigning.
Or does it simply depend on your area? |

I believe it varies from area to area just as it does in the local school systems - they vary - what is correct for one is not necessarily the same as another.
I just sent my mailer out a couple of days ago (Friday) to the libraries and it already generated several bookings on Monday so I just hope it keeps up
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.

All of the library jobs that I have ever booked were decision made by the local librarians. I do know that the local librarian in my area all email each other about entertainers.
