I haven't seen anything else written about this, so here is a quick opinion.
It's a single effect downloadable pdf, costing $12.50, or about £8.75 at current exchange rates. I like to read and so I usually put my hard-earned towards a book rather than a single item like this, but Santa supplied me with books to keep me going, and I'd been intrigued by this for a while, so I bought it. The description says that it is impromptu, from a 'cold' deck, and it is, the deck can be dog-eared or even incomplete and it will still work. In one sense, this reminds me of Whit Haydn's 'Chicago Surprise' pdf in that you have to do a particular sleight that hobbyist such as myself (and even, I read, more accomplished performers) often shy away from, but it provides you with excellent cover for it. I'm drifting away from 'moves' and becoming much more interested in 'effect', and as I do, my assessment of what makes a good 'trick' is changing as a result. If you buy a book, you can't reasonably expect to use everything from it, but you can get value for your money by finding a number of things you use. If you buy a single effect, the risk of wasting your cash is obviously much higher. I used to do an ACAAN-type effect, but I've since incorporated it as the ending phase of another effect, and as 'Two Cold Caans' is very different, it neatly fills a gap, and it's a 1 out of 1 successful purchase from my point of view. Hi everyone,
Two Cold Caans is my version of a very old, overdone effect from the turn of the century, 1900's. Now, it's almost extinct. The only recollections that I could find of it were stories that Bill Palmer shared about Ted Lesley. According to Bill, Ted lectured a version of this. In fact, his WHOLE lecture was over an hour, only on THIS EFFECT! At that point at the turn of the century, it became so overdone that every magician basically stopped using it, due to overexposure. Not exposure of the secret, just the effect itself. I've known of this piece for over 25 years, and I always thought that it was brilliant, but I never had the place for it. Also, it requires a LOT of presence, personality and performance ability to really make it 'pop.' I only know or do a couple of card tricks. That's how special this one is to me. The only two in my performing repertoire are this and the Mind Power Deck. When the audience doesn't have their own pack at my paying shows, I usually just pull out the Mind Power Deck. It's like a book test. If you have to use your own deck or books, then it really just loses a lot of the impossibility factor. Plus, I just really like the minimalist factor of performing with what's on hand, not carrying around a lot of cards and props in my pockets. That's just way too needy, in my opinion. My contributions to it are the splitting of the deck, their simultaneous retrieval of the cards at their chosen numbers, and the pitched comparison to the hugely popular Any Card at Any Number effects. I have basically shaved several minutes off of the time that it takes the two helpers to find their cards to begin the revelation stage of the effect, compared to the originals. This can be done on a huge stage, as well. The looks on the faces of the helpers just really sells the effect that has just taken place. This is stadium stuff, as long as there is a camera on the faces of the helpers and on the card as it's produced. If you own any of my stuff, you know that I like really direct, really clean methods. This one is no exception. The built-in misdirection points in this piece are just nothing less than captivating. When you explain to the audience the heightened constraints involved in what you're doing, compared to the setups and urban legend aspects of the most popular of the 'holy grail' ACAAN effects, then you really educate and peak the interest of the audience. Never in history has an effect had so much hype and buildup in the magic community than the current rage for ACAAN. As the description implies, this is a repeated any card at any number with a borrowed deck that you have never touched before. After being shown how to deal on the first card revelation, the second spectator even deals the cards when counting down to their number for the second revelation! Although I call this a CAAN, or Card at Any Number, I believe that it actually qualifies as an ACAAN, since you're using a borrowed, untouched, shuffled deck. However, some magicians and purists might question that, since the popular ACAAN versions allow the card to be thought of, as well as the counted down number. Either way, when you sell it to the audience this way, it gets huge gasps and reactions. This is not a math force or force of any kind. Even if it were, you have no way of knowing what the card order was. No peeks, no ambiguity of counts. Every time that you do it, the procedure is EXACTLY the same! No variations to accomplish the effect. I've done this for a room full of adults and I've done it for an auditorium full of 12-year-olds. It's so direct and effective, they both really love it! But, my favorite place for this is house parties where they might have a deck of cards that I've never touched or seen. My other favorite place to perform this is at a magic club or lecture. The fairness of the constraints is simply overwhelming. Two Cold Caans goes over so well at a lecture that this manuscript outsells each of my other sets of lecture notes! Yes, I sold more than either Finger Magic, Slamdown, Standing Between Objects, Free Will of Order, and Inconceivable. Those are some heavy hitters! Either it's that good performed live, or magicians just can't pass up a card trick (Two Cold Caans is my only card trick offered). Thanks again Muse for the nice review of Two Cold Caans and all of the others out there for your interest in this effect. It's an old favorite of mine, and I'm thrilled to be able to bring it back to life. Everything is cyclical, and great magic is no exception. Jimmy Fingers http://www.jimmyfingers.com |
