Can anyone shed some light on the laws relating to the reproduction of historical posters and images in print or on the Net? I've heard contradictory things relating to how and when images revert from being copyrighted to being 'in the public domain' and have seen various disclaimers used with regard to discs of such things being sold in quantity on Ebay, etc.
Is there perhaps a general rule depending on when they were originally copyrighted or when a particular copyright expired, or might it depend on whether a particular performer's descendants, estate or other party instituted a copyright at a later date? Any idea of where to find information pertaining to international rights regarding individual classic magic posters would be much appreciated.

Classic magic posters fall under the same category as any other work of graphical art. However, there are some copyrights that apply to certain reissues of these posters in slightly different sizes and formats.

The length of a copyright is determined by law, not by the performer's estate.

You can look this up at the Library of Congress web site.
