I just moved office and finally I can get to display my puppets on the shelves. It's important to do so in order to prolong the live of the puppets.
So I did a count of the number of puppets I have so far... I have 31 puppets! Check it out: Am I crazy to own so many puppets? Or this is considered small? |

If you are crazy, then so was Jim Henson. So that puts you in excellent company.

Yes, you're crazy...CRAZY ABOUT PUPPETS! I love them too but I don't have much of a collection. I know other ventriloquists who have enormous puppet collections, several rooms full. Yours is pretty reasonable compared to theirs.

No, not crazy at all, at least not in our little circle, now those not into it, what they may think may be a whole different story......but who cares.
There was a point where I had 30-some hard figures here, not to mention a collection of Pelham vent figures, way too many vent dolls - some still new in the box, that's not including the couple dozen Simon Sez dolls I have for an idea for a program I had, and then the soft puppets....well, I mentioned in one thread about the lion puppet I bought a dozen of, and there were a number of others, from Sunny & Co. puppets, to Axtells, etc., etc.,....what am I saying.... I did sell off a bunch of stuff, but there's still a LOT floating around here. So if you're crazy, as you can see, you're not alone, and as Mr. Pitts said, there's people with way bigger collections. And I wouldn't worry about it, there's lots worse things you could spend your money on.

It's pretty common. For years I had one vent figure (Louie), a few Muppet style puppets I made for a film, and a set of Punch and Judy puppets. Mostly, except for Louie, they were in boxes.
Then, a few years back I saw the opportunity to buy a larger hand-crafted vent figure. I did. And the next thing I knew I had five of 'em. People who collect shot glasses have a lot more product. Don't worry about it. -Philip |

Hahaha! If you are crazy then I must be mad!
I have well over 300 soft puppets and more than 50 marionettes and growing and now I am growing my vent figures collection. I think if you get a rack and stand your puppets up,they will make a fantastic display. And it'll look neater and your puppets with their clothes will not be all crumpled up. I can see several of the puppets I made for you. Have fun collecting!

I would like to see a roll call from everyone with the counts of how many characters each has. (I'm sure that somewhere is a head Dr. who would like to analyze all of us collectively)

Crap. It might take me a couple days to get am accurate count, not that I have so many, but they are kind of here, there and everywhere.
Although that would depend on what all that included - every puppet, vent doll, vent figure, vent novelty that talks, etc.

Yeah, I've got five hard figures...but also a large soft figure duck and a whiteboard/ventriloquist thing and a little antique vent critter from the 1920's and my original vent figure that is a rebuilt/changed 1950's Jerry Mahoney and a set of Punch and Judy puppets in a box in the basement, and three Hazelle marionettes from the 1950's hanging in the corner of the office and perhaps four or five Muppet-style puppets from a Phillips 66 commercial film I did in the sixties and a Muppet-style "Elvin the Elf" who turns up from time to time on the local public TV station, and a skull puppet made from a Visible Man plastic skull from the 1960's, and several boxes of handmade hand puppets from decades ago, and a Steiff beagle that is so rare it's not in any of the catalogues and books anymore and a bunch of hand puppets I bought when I was a kid in the 1950's. I'd have the devil's own time cataloguing them all...and I suspect I have one of the smaller collections.

Okay, well, just going off the top of my head rather than taking an actual count, I have eight hard figures here, and another one on the way.
I have a six Pelham vent puppets on display, I'm pretty sure there's a few more in a box somewhere. Latex - I have three Loviks, a flexi-folk figure and two puppets in a can (I REALLY love those puppets in a can, wish someone would make those again). Soft puppets - I have the dozen lion puppets plus the original my friend sent me that got me hooked on them. I have a Folkmanis Maestro which is a really cool character, wish I could get a spare of him, but Folkmanis seems to only make just so many of some of their puppets before discontinuing, I'm sure to drive up collector value. There's also an assortment of others, the cheaper ones made by Sunny & Co., I have a few of the dog puppets from that on-line pet store that went out of business (he's white with spots and holds a microphone - maybe it was called "Pets.com", I can't remember now). I have two dozen Simon Sez vent dolls here, the one with the headstick. I have a couple Jerry Mahoneys with a headstick, and an assortment of other vent dolls. I sold off most of my vent novelties, both those I bought and those I made, but I still have a vent head walking stick, and a "Ventriloquist's Handbook" as I called it that I made, and a small vent head with a slot jaw I carved for a mini figure (a little smaller than a vent doll head - but I still haven't made a body for it). I'm probably forgetting a few, but I guess that's the majority. And if anyone asks about figures and puppets we've owned but no longer have, I will scream. No way I'm going there trying to remember them all.

Wow, guys, I am amazed at your collections, I'd love to see them some time..
I have Henry, a Brose kit figure I built myself. 3 Folkmanis puppets and two inexpensive muppet style soft puppets, plus a few miscellaneous toys I use as puppets in the act. |

I can't speak for anyone else, for me, it's an addiction. I play guitar and in those circles (maybe in other circles too) they call it G.A.S. - Gear Acquisition Syndrome. I got bit by that bug too, at one point I had sixty-some guitars here, not to mention the amps, effects, etc., etc., and there too, there were many with much more. For some people, and I guess I'm one, if they really love something, they just want to surround themselves with as much of it as possible. I whittled down my vent stuff at one point, and I've whittled down the guitar stuff and still working on making that "collection" smaller.
Although, if I'm not careful....I just bought a figure in November, and another one at the end of Dec. that was just shipped today.....it's a disease.

Um, you wouldn't want to sell one of those amps, would you?

Interesting. Blueshawk.... do you have a guitar-playing figure? Perhaps you could combine your two passions!
Seriously, these collections are very impressive and fascinating to read about. Jonathan
