As an American and as a father and husband I'm more than a bit shaken, disturbed, upset and angry over the events that took place yesterday in Arizona.
I've got a comedy gig tonight, and honestly, I just don't feel funny today. I feel sad. I feel scared. Part of me just wants to stay home, cuddle my girls and never let them go. Another part of me, the part of me that went into this business to begin with, knows that the noblest thing I can do is go out and get as many laughs per minute as I can, because if anybody in that audience is feeling anything close to what I am feeling, it will be healing, restorative and ennobling to their soul. So, as of 3:15 this afternoon, that's the plan. Anybody else ever come up against a similar situation? Where does your funny bone hide, and how do you get it out to play? -Brian |

You are providing therapy to every audience member who will see your show. Perhaps the audience will share some warm moments that will ease your pain. Who ever said the show must go on must have had great coping skills, high pain tolerance or a very poor memory.

This happened of course back in 2001 as well as other times. Getting real with our audiences is always a great start. (at least for this nearly normal comedian)
Laughter is part of healing. This can be seen at funerals. At my uncles, the Rabbi asked for a show of hands on "who has Stan made laugh". We can laugh and cry together. I am guessing I am not the only one that shared a smile and a tear after a show, when someone came up with teary eyes and said, "Thanks, that was the first time I had a good laugh since my husband died earlier this year."
