I’m wondering about a particular handling I have in mind. I’m working on something that I want to present as pure Mentalism (not Magic), with the spectators (seated around a table) doing as much as possible themselves. Almost everything will happen in someone else’s hands.
That said, using an I.D. I’ll obviously have to do the handling, but at the reveal does anybody ever TOSS OUT the chosen card? It strikes me that without the rest of the deck, a single card isn’t likely to expose the method. I’m thinking about showing the chosen card, and just tossing it casually onto the table (which will also allow me to pocket the deck). Has anybody (or does anybody) do this? Does it make the effect stronger, weaker, no change? Is it worth the risk? What are your thoughts?
...what if I could read your mind?

This is a debate I've seen here before... whether letting the spectator handle some props just makes them want to handle the rest.
In the end, I think it comes down to audience management. If I was going to hand the card out then I think I'd nonchalantly box the rest of the deck while they were looking at it. if you wer really tricky you could even pull a deck switch at that time so if they DO ask to see the rest of the deck you can hand it to them

You’re right, this one’s ALL about audience management. In this case, they’ll be handling almost everything (some of them may leave the place thinking they are psychic!)
I had in mind to pocket the deck while everyone’s reaching for the card, and actually switch in a stacked/memorized deck for the next effect, which would end with that regular deck in their hands. (The stack is such that it would never be recognized.) I’m just not sure whether someone would notice the different textures by handling a single card. Probably someone who was a magician would think of that, but would “lay people”?

I do ID all the time - as a matter of fact just did it for a friend about 20 minutes ago.
I always pull the card and lay it on the table. I don't hand it out (my hand to theirs) but of there is a table I toss the face down card cleanly onto the table to let the moment percolate and build a moment... then do a reveal. IMO there is no deck sw***h necessary or needed - 99.99% of the time the spectator is blow to bits. They generally never ask to see the deck itself. To me doing a deck sw***h would add needless complexity and "moves" to a perfect "no move" effect. Now granted of you were going to use that same deck for other things a sw***h might be a good thing. To your point though, I always place the card lightly face down - clean as can be.

Oh your probably right. But I think nonchalantly boxing the deck is a subtle social discouragement from asking to loo kat it.
The deck switch just occurred to me as something you *could* do. It has a drawback though that if they examined it *closely* they'd find a duplicate card.

I do start boxing the deck BTW fairly quickly following the reveal - so I agree Cyberqat with you there.
