I have one story I would like to share. I was stationed in Augsburg Germany in 1975 and in a small bar having a beer and talking to another G.I. about Houdini. One of the locals who was considerably drunk walked up and demanded I do a magic trick for him since if I was talking about Houdini I must be some great magician. He was laughing and trying to impress the girl behind the bar. So I said OK. Watch! I held up my finger on my left hand and made a fist of my right. I told him I would make my finger jump from my left hand to my right. I put my hands behind my back changing my left into a fist and my right to a finger brought them out with a flourish and said TA DAH! His eyes bugged!! and turned around and walked back to his seat. I and my friend laughed till we cried. The Girl behind the bar after she quite laughing bought us a beer and we spent a great evening chatting with the locals.

Illusion and magic is the same, if it was possible to achieve the impossible by genuine powers then it wouldn’t be impossible and therefore it wouldn’t be magic. That’s why magic is an art; the art of creating the illusion of the impossible.

Later the next day we talked about it some more and we worked a whole act. one finger from one hand to the other, Multiplying fingers. Even a mini linking ring routine where you make a ring with your your and forefinger turn your body so no one can see then ling your fingers together. We about died. The OD (Officer on Duty) saw us with tears in our eyes and wanted to know what was so funny, We explained what happened in the bar and what we had come up with. I thought he was going to bust a gut.

Back in the pre-politically incorrect days it was presented as a polish magic trick. Derogatory now I know but back then not quite so much.
