200 points - In this classic Doyle story Holmes and Watson meet a magician who busks in taverns.
400 points - In this Basal Rathbone film Holmes visits an underground buskers Café.

I'm asking for the names of the two classic Sherlock Holmes stories that fit the above descriptions.
The first is a Conan Doyle short story, in which one of the characters is a magician who performs in taverns for tips. A classic nineteenth century busker. The second is a little harder, a Basel Rauthbone movie in which Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson go into a tavern frequented by buskers. It is litteraly underground. These are musicians not magic buskers, but does Holmes says " They're buskers, Watson, you've seen them....." and this is not a Doyle story, but is in the classic Holmes mode. OK ?

If in fact it is in "classic" Holmes mode, then it has to be "Hound of the Baskervilles" (not likely) or "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" which are the only two Rathbone films to be set in the proper era. (All the rest were updated into the 1930s)
I've read all the actual Conan Doyle stores (as well as a few by his son Adrian) and don't remember one with a magician in a tavern.

Ringmaster, you make it way too easy. That's fine, as I never would have heard of it otherwise.

There is one called "The Man With The Twisted Lip" but he doesn't do magic. So which story is this?

Crooked Man was published in 1893 in "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventu......oked_Man It's also on the first page of the link you provided. You must have missed it. http://www.sherlockian.net/canon/stories/croo.html

Ah. Now I have to go to the library and take out the Holmes Omnibus I haven't read in decades.
Thanks, by the way. Still looking for the Rathbone movie. (I remember "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" had Rathbone in disguise as a song and dance man in a music hall, but I don't remember a busker. Of course, you see how good my memory is.)
