Has anyone heard of a gospel routine for the snowstorm illusion? I've been playing around with a few, but none of them feel right.

Greetings...
I present the snowstorm beginning with a red strip of paper which I tear up and then restore again explaining that our lives can be 'torn' apart but there is one who can make us whole. I then tear the red strip of paper saying that we are "torn apart" by sin, but if we are washed in the blood of the lamb... (I immerse the torn paper into water) ...though our sins be as scarlet, God will make them as white as snow. At this point, of course, I fan the red, wet paper into white, flowing "snow". I have made some slight alterations to typical snowstorm "prop" in order to use red paper initially, but it's worth the effort in order to illustrate one of the Lord's great promises. |

Great idea Andrew! (did I get your name right?)
Great idea for a great effect. Which version do you use? Kevin James? Joe Marotta |

Thanks, both of you.
Yes, the name is Andrew. Actually, I haven't seen Kevin James perform his version. (Except for what I have seen in his ads in Magic Magazine) I learned the original 'Snowstorm from China' effect from good ole Tarbell and made some modifications for my presentation. I believe what Kevin James does (judging from the ads alone) is another effect altogether. Is that right? There is a world of great basic ideas in Tarbell that I believe are over-looked. |

First I will say that I don't know about the Kevin James version, so I can't comment there, but you made a really good point about the value of ideas in Tarbell, Andrew!
I saw some pretty amazing card handling at the Battle of the Magicians in Canton, two weeks ago, and when one of the fellows (Tobias Pashia) was asked about it, he said "I got it from the 'Royal Road' and the only reason it looks new, is that nobody reads books anymore..." Tarbell and other great printed sources, lay ripe for the picking by those with the desire and energy to go after it. I am a visual/video kind of guy, and had pretty much let my books gather dust - but as a result of that eye-opening statement, I am already starting to take a few books along wherever I go, looking for those nuggets. Thanks to you also for the confirmation about these wonderful resources. BroDavid

You're welcome...thanks for the encouragement, BroDavid!
I too have started to acquire videos and have found them to be a very helpful instruction tool, but as we both have noted, the great wealth of magic effects lies untapped by many in those old volumes. Sorry, I quess I got us a little off topic here. Apologies to the original poster, Trikcard...hope you don't mind. Andrew |

Kevin James makes the Snow Animator, a bar stool that you sit containing a hidden blower that blows the snow that you provide out of your hands. About U.S. $1800. at http://www.kjmagic.com
Collector's Workshop makes a less expensive model called the Blizzard that's worn under your shirt or coat and via co2 cartridges, blows the paper snow that you provide from your hands. About U.S. $800. Those are the only two "mechanical" methods that I know of, other than the original, oriental paper fan method. Anyone else have a gospel routine suggestion for Snow Storm in China? csgaa,
I'm not usually in the habit of putting gospel themes to my stuff because they just don't usually match well enough for my taste, but for some reason this snowstorm effect of yours really clicks. Excellent idea. Sable

Sable,
I understand your reluctance in fusing the gospel with magic routines. Joining the two can sometimes distract from both the message and the effect and you can end up with an audience who has the 'deer in the headlights' look...wondering what you are getting at! But just as in writing songs, sometimes the words come first and sometimes the tune. Either way, I rely on the inspiriation of the Holy Spirit to spark my creativity in blending the two. Some of the Gospel routines I perform are more 'attention getters' than they are Parallel illustrations. Andrew |

The Snowstorm in China effect can be found in the Magic of Faucett Ross by Lewis Ganson. I too have thought about this effect over the years, but didn't like the mess!! But, with this idea it does seem worth digging out the book and checking it out again. Thanks.

Last night at the Magic Castle, Danny Cole ended his excellent routine with silver CDs which he broke into 4 pieces in his hand and then scattered all the pieces with a Japanese fan, ala snowstorm. All the pieces flying around were silver like the CD. Really a nice ending to an excellent act!
Maybe someone performing coins would like to end their Miser's Dream this way.... Joe Marotta |

This one works great here in the U.S., and in other countries. God made each of us different, just like snowflakes are all different. No two are alike. But just like snow melts after winter, we die. But we don't have to worry if we believe in Jesus Christ. (During that time, show a cut out in a napkin or something of a snowflake. Then crumple it up and dip it in water. Then continue with the snowstorm routine. The people in Peru loved this, cause they'd never seen snow ever!)

Hi Justin,
Welcome to the Cafe and especially to the Good News Topic! It's great to find other Christian magicians out there using their talents to share the truths about Jesus Christ to the world. Great patter for snowstorm Justin. Sounds like this could become a good 'invitation' point in an evangelistic show. Looking forward to reading more of your posts. Joe Marotta |

Justin, Welcome to the Magic Cafe!
Thanks for sharing your ideas for the Snowstorm. For those who have never seen snow, this must make quite an impression! And Joe...I like the idea of using a 'silver snowstorm' concept at the end of a Miser's Dream routine. I've been considering adding this routine to my act, but hadn't thought of a good ending...this could be it! Thanks. |

Hey guys,
I know this is an old post, but does anyone know of a source for gold snowstorm loads. I have been looking for a climax for my miser's dream routine and this could be it. Thanks, Richard |

Richard,
I used to get mine from Larry Maples but I haven't seen them lately. You can also get some very good ones from Mondo magic. They have a variety of different colors including red, white and blue for a patrotic routine. Their website is http://www.mondomagic.com |
