For what its worth my instinct if not my experience tells me that effects achieved by way of good misdirection create the most powerful dilemma's.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

It's great when one's instinct and experience can be aligned. ;-)

That is very comforting, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it...I do think I could learn something about those fields if I really put my mind to it. It is not that I didn't think I was capable of learning a new subject. I really would like to hear an authoritative opinion. Studying a subject for two or three years doesn't make you an expert. I would much more value the opinion of someone who actually has made a life's work out of studying and learning to understand something, than any opinion I might come up with after two or three years of study of a new field on my own. I have other work to do that I am better suited to do. It is good to know how to do research, but it is also good to know when you need to seek help from a professional...and Magill has reminded me of that many, many times. |

Even conceptually it's horrifying as it assumes or seems to assume that the change could only be for the better. But, why would that necessarily be so? There's no logical reason that it should be so. In fact I could offer sound 'seeming' arguments that on balance magic is probably a negative. I don't believe that, in fact I believe quite the opposite, but I could argue for it. Good call,

Thanks Whit!
I have however another point that you may consider and perhaps I can surprise you. I am not suggesting that you should study something that is new to you. I am suggesting that you could take a look at something you already are an expert on, but from another point of view. Let me give you a lead in: "On Being Certain, Believing You Are Right Even When You're Not" by Robert A. Burton This is a neurologists view on something that is very central to magic. Besides, it is a joy to read.
"There is no reality, only perception."

Thanks, Stellan, for your continuing interest in my education. Your efforts to school me in the craft have been stimulating and helpful in ways difficult to say.
I will look at the book you have recommended. However, I should tell you that I have read lots of books in these fields already. I studied psychology in university and graduate school as well as interning in a state mental hospital for three months in counseling. My degree was in Philosophy and Comparative Religion, and my graduate work was in studying for the Episcopal Ministry. I am not completely illiterate in the field. I think you mistake my desire to discuss these things with an expert as a searching for preliminary information. I have done my research. It is highly disrespectful to imply that I haven't. I am not looking for the kind of information you can look up on the internet, or read in a book. I think it is rather patronizing to assume that. And, I don't believe my education is seriously lacking, or that I am too old to learn something new. |
