For the last couple of years I've been interested in sideshows. I've learned several stunts but only have done them for Friends and family. I've been asked to do a couple things for a local Valentines Cabaret. So I really need to learn how to put a short act together tied to a theme. I'm going to do the bed of nails with my wife standing on my chest and then breaking a cinder block, I'm also going to walk on glass. Any ideas how to tie this into the valentines theme? Also is there any books or video on scripting?

Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble...all have books on scripting.

Theater, drama & comedy....and always keep in mind Salieri's criticism of one of Mozart's pieces in AMADEUS (it's a good piece of advice): "you didn't even give them a good bang at the end of the piece so they'd know when to applaud..."

The book "Scripting magic" is very good for ideas.

Who is your character? More importantly in terms of scripting, why is he doing these things? Think of that and the occasion, and you'll come up with something decent.
May I try? Im going to try an in-the-moment one-shot first take - you can let your mind fly in the same way if you quit "trying" and get your writer's block out of the way. SCRIPT: They asked me to come here and teach you a couple of things for Valentine's Day. One directed at men, one at women. And my whole point is, love is awesome, love is surprising, love is often shocking, and I'm going to demonstrate that right now! Guys, first a little illustration for you. Remember that soaring, head over heels in love feeling? It doesn't last, but what takes its place can be agonizing or sublime. Remember what it's like those first few weeks ... you know ... in bed? Here's what it's like after awhile (reveal bed of nails). But that's not all! This here is pain enough, but then ... (mimicing wife's voice) "Honey, would you get me a little snack? Just something sweet, maybe an apple?" (You lob an apple onto the bed and it sticks into the nails) Oh, yeah. Or "maybe a little bitty (voice becomes enraged) MELON?" (lob a melon) (still enraged) "HOW BOUT YOUR HEART, HOW ABOUT THAT???" Well, after a while you can learn to tolerate the pain, like this (lie on bed). But it doesn't stop ... oh no, never ... "Honey, are you all right? Let me get a closer look, maybe you're sick" (do the stand-on-your-chest thing, she ends by peering down at your face) "You do look a bit sick, I know just what you need to take your mind off it" (do the cinderblock thing) (Said as you stand up and show that you haven't been damaged:) But guys ... I'm telling you, I'm here to swear to you ... not only can you stand it, it just makes you love her more. (Give her a big kiss and really mean it). (She hangs out off to the side for the glass walk, until the end) And ladies (said as you lay out the glass-walking canvas) that man can be a trial. I've heard that in great detail from my wife. Many times. ... Many, many, many, many times. ... (pour out the broken glass, a nice big pour emphasizing each script point:) All those little quirks you have that she once found cute, all those sweeeet little HABITS! All that HAIR IN THE BATHTUB! All that UNDERWEAR DROPPED ON THE FLOOR! It's not so cute now is it, ladies? In fact ... guys take note, ladies tell me if you agree, it feels like THIS! (Do the glass walking, jumping, whatever, display some pain, and at the first hint of a cheer "Am I telling the truth, ladies?") But somehow, some bloody how, she still loves you (your wife steps back to your side and kisses you) That's my Valentine's Day lesso9n, thank you! |

This Sat. is our first real practice for the show so I've been working on the script. Today my wife came up to my work shop to practice breaking cinder blocks. I told her that I thought it would be more interesting if she did the glass walk and I do the bed of nails. She decided to try the glass walking and didn't have any problem. Anyway she agreed to do the walking if I do the talking! It's still a work in progress.
