Hi folks, not new to magic as a whole but I am new to (performing) rope magic specifically. I perform semi-professionally on a regular basis and specialize in close-up and strolling magic. I work mainly with cards, coins, elastics, sponges etc... I have been meaning to pick up and work on a rope routine for a while now and have finally decided to get off my heiney and just do it. I'm familiar with some of the basics and the concepts. I believe I have Daryl's rope magic (video lol) lying around somewhere as well. Yesterday I ordered Fiber Optics Extended and 50' of rope. I've seen some comments regarding F.O. for the good and bad. I'm big on making routines my own and working other learned or made up moves/flourishes into them overtime and coming up with solid and tested routines. That stuff said. I'm guess I'm looking for feedback or recommendations from you folks experienced in rope work on what my best course of action would be based on the material I've noted.
I understand this is a bit broad of a question and I'm okay with a variance of advice. Many great minds with extensive experience here on the Café and that's what I'm looking to tap

Your name Makmagic is a trademark of MakMagic inc., kind of distracting.

Nice, my name explanation isn't nearly as convoluted as that of MAK Magic Inc. (http://www.makmagic.com/about.asp) Mine is simply my initials with a Magic appendage.
Thanks for the link.

Hi MAKMagic,
Ring and Rope material works very well in Close-Up situations as well as single rope effects like toss a knot. One handed knot etc... These are good because while they can be a part of a routine they can be done singly. I'm sure you know, performing with and for them is better than performing at them, especially Close-Up. Breaking it up allows for that interaction. "The Dennis Loomis Knot Routine ... Plus!" is a good source for Rope effects of this sort. I have a small part on that DVD http://www.loomismagic.com Daryl's "Expert Rope Magic Made Easy" Series is excellent. It's an A1 product so I'd contact Daryl directly for a source. foolerdoolers.com Aldo Colombini is good with Rope and has more Ring and Rope Material. He can tell you the best DVD for that. http://www.wildcolombini.com Flips Material is Great and has Ring and Rope Material as well. He is a pioneer. LLPUB.COM Of course George Sands Can't be forgotten. His work is the basis for much of Rope Magic today. Good Luck. -Mary Mowder |

Michael-
I think you will find a treasure in rope magic! All the suggestion are good, to which I would add the Tabary DVD and the Fulves easy rope magic book... Jim

Daryl's 3-DVD set certainly is an excellent resource! Fiber Optics (DVD) by Sanders is also worth a look.

As a recent initiate into rope effects, permit me to offer the following suggestions: I think that Magic Ian's rope DVDs are excellent. He demonstrates very clearly excellent effects, compelling routines, and the methods are very, very good. The Dennis Loomis knot routine DVD is also very good, and features an excellent effect by Mary Mowder. If you like books, the Karl Fulves Self Working Rope Tricks book covers the basics, but the Gabe Fajuri edition of the Stewart James Encyclopedia can't be beat. There is also an excellent e-book available from Spellbinder on the Ted Collins Panama Rope Mystery that explains a classic routine exceptionally clearly, with terrific photographs from the mage's point-of-view. I have found it very helpful.

MAK;
Check out one of my favorites, Whit "Pop" Haydn's Mongolian Pop Knot. Scroll down to "Teaching The Classics". http://www.whithaydn.com/video_clips.htm The routine follows Whit's Silk to Egg at 4:00 minutes. Good luck, Doug

Hi Mike
Good to talk to you again. I am a rope magic addict, and my best advise to you is to take Magical Mary's advise. I like Daryl's three DVD set of rope magic, and there is more cool stuff than you can shake a stick at in the Stewart James encyclopedia. Magician's rope trick is a great one too. It was smart of you to buy fiber optics extended. If you put them all together you can put together a personal rope magic routine that you can be proud of. HAVE FUN

I agree that Mr. Haydn's Mongolian Pop Knot Routine is a classic, and studying it is very worthwhile in terms of learning how the series of effects is structured. His text is very edifying, but it is at a somewhat higher level. It's the kind of recipe that begins: "Make a roux." You have to know how to accomplish some of the basic rope effects in order to take advantage of it. For that, any of the mentioned sources would be good, although I will recommend again Professor Spellbinder's e-book edition of the Corporal Collins Panama Rope Trick routine which you can purchase for only four dollars here. I just looked at it again, and I think it is the clearest presentation of some of the basic moves you need that I know of.
