It all very much depends on our ages and stages in life I think. What used to be terrific can now seem old hat. Also movies we enjoyed with loved ones who maybe are no longer with us.

I remember going to see John Wayne in THE SEARCHERS about four or five time with my parents who are now both gone. I now rightly or wrongly think it the finest western ever made.

One of the first movies I ever took my girlfriend (now my wife) to see was THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN. Needless to say, now rated very highly by us both.

Out of all the superb warfilms ever made I go for one that the action scenes look like cardboard models these days, - THE DAMBUSTERS - but it's just that incredible effort Barnes Wallace made combined with the incredible bravery of the pilots, combined with Eric Coates' superb music that does it for me!

I think a pure, almost 'sacred' choice for so many of us will probably be THE WIZARD OF OZ.

What used to be 'scary' or 'filthy' movies fall the hardest with time I think (with some exceptions like BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, some of the old Universals/Hammers). SOLDIER BLUE was recently on TV. I warned my kids that it was banned in many cinemas when it was made. They both watched it, yawning! Same with LAST TANGO, - a bit of a yawner now, although probably still embarassing for some to watch. Someone mentioned LIFE OF BRIAN (Monty Python). I always remember a TV interview with the great Kirk Douglas (Michael's dad). Kirk said that seeing Terry Jones leaning out of that window (playing Brian's mum), was a classic moment in film history!! I know that this has been mentioned before in the Café - but how about a "classic moment" being 'Puttin on the Ritz'
in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN? or Steve Martin and Michael Caine in DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (the monkey boy scenes).

Dir. Godfrey Reggio
Score. Philip Glass

Saviour of the soul - Andy Lau (hong Kong surreal action, top camera work and no CGI) [the only place to get it is P2P, you can't buy this film anymore]

AWESOME.
