Hello guys.. I just saw the "sun and moon" routine that Geoff Latta performs in the NYCM vol 4.
For this particular routine I need a copper coin to fit into a silver shell. The coins I use are regular half dollars (not the silver ones) and copper English pennies. The problem is that the pennies don't fit into the shell. Is a good idea to make the penny a little bit smaller using some tools?

Use a fine wet dry emery cloth on a block of wood slowly shave the copper coin.

Never actually thought of that. I just reversed the copper and silver so that a half dollar was going into penny shell. I think I think I like the idea of shaving the penny down more.

I also used a copper shell this way. But for this particular routine you need the oposite. Geoff Latta tells a wonderful story while performing it.

I love that routine and when I saw it for the first time ran to grab my closeup case and got out my Johnson expanded shell and an English penny and ran into the same issue.
I went and got some fine sandpaper and put on a block of wood and sanded the edges down until it fit into the shell. I finished the edges with a extra fine Emory board. That would work for you. TC |

There is always the option of getting an expanded or super-expanded ] if the regular ] doesn't work. They are too terribly expensive either. That way you don't have to destroy coins.

I may be mistaken here, but I thought I read somewhere the Johnson Shell is the problem, whereas the Sasco or Sterling Expanded Shell fits. Can anyone confirm?

In my experience Doug a regular exp. half shell will not accept an old english penny.

You will find that I light touch of the emerly cloth will help to adjust the fix of most coins. |

Thank you for clearing that up! I must have been mistaken. The emery cloth is the solution!

Sorry, let me put that in english.
You will find that a light touch of the emery cloth will help to adjust the fit of most coins. This works on any coin, just remember if you are dealing with a coin that that has milled edges be very careful not to remove the milling. Also keep the coin al 90degrees to the emery. PS The edge of your copper coin will be very sharp when you finsh so you may want to dull it. Joe |

Hello All
I took 4 Old English Penny's to the local Jeweler at one of the flea markets around here, he used his polisher to do it in about 10 min's for all of them and when asked why I wanted it that way -I simply told him what they were for and showed him the [ . He was more then glad to do it, and even made sure that all fit perfectly!! AND He only charged me 20.00 bucks!!!! Yea! Sal |

I have shaved down my irish pennies to fit an expanded shell with a knife sharpening stone. It takes no more than 10 minutes or so to do this.

Could you grind it down very carefully with a dremmel tool? I have a cordless that I use to buff polish on all my shineables it came with grinders and sandpaper attachments. I have enough extra english pennies to mess with.
