I did a search on internet movie data base for Tress MacNeil and discovered she has "Calvin and Hobbs" as a voice job she did. So there's something out there somewhere! Mandrake... I found that information too!! It also listed the name of the guy (I can't remember his name right now, but it would be easy enough to find again) who provided the voice for Hobbes! It listed the name of the movie/tv show/special/whatever it is, as "Calvin and Hobbes" Now I'm REALLY curious...Is there a C&H movie out there, in the can, sitting on a shelf waiting for a Judge somewhere to decide if it can be released? I'd love to see it...I know several here have said or implied that they wouldn't want to see it...I can understand that...But I also am confindent in my knowledge of Calvin and Hobbes to realize that I would simply be curious as to how these folks interpreted the material... I'd be eager to see if they portrayed the characters (voice, inflection, attitude, quirks) the same why I do in my mind when I read the strip. It's the same thing for me with "Harry Potter" book vs movie.... The movies are cool. I love the books. Prof. Piper :juggle:

It's my pleasure to resurrect this topic in the hope that somebody who has had the misfortune of never reading "Calvin & Hobbes" might go and search out this wonderful, wonderful piece of Americana. I consider it much more than just a comic strip. It's actually literature to me. There are universal truths and cosmic insights within Calvin's world, and whenever I'm feeling down or blue, it never fails to make me smile.
If you've never had the pleasure, than consider this post that you've stumbled upon to be a good omen: Go out and buy a Calvin & Hobbes book. You'll thank me later. I promise. |

Calvin and Hobbes was my favorite comic strip as well, and I picked up the three-volume set as soon as it hit the stores. I had collected all the softback books, but the chance to own all the strips in their actual sizes and colors was too good to pass up!
There will never be a C&H movie or anything else, because Waterson refused to license the characters for anything other than the strip itself. You think Charles Shultz' Peanuts characters are ubiquitous? It's because of licensing, and Waterson believed that such a thing killed the very thing that made a good comic strip. He writes about this extensively in the 10th Anniversary book, and in the new books also. Tresure them. They'll be the last of Calvin and Hobbes we'll ever get. Carrie |

I like the one where Calvin gets all indignant about the statement that something "will take light-years," because light-years are a measure of distance, not time, and you can't use a measurement of one quantity to talk about another, for Pete's sake! Then his mom yells something like, "Quiet down! You kids are making a ton of noise!"

I like the one where Calvin's dad explains to him why old photos are all in black and white. Brought tears to my eyes the first time I read it.
I relate this verbatim whenever I can shoehorn it into conversation.

Calvin and Hobbes was (is) amazing.
I admire Bill Waterson for everything he went through for his strip. |

Calvin and Hobbes is the best!!!! A total inspiration. Hard to pick a favorite part, since all of it is so good.

Well, Calvin sure has a lot of fans here. I don't have the books as space is taken up with magic stuff. I enjoyed it in a great form - reading it at the top of the comics page everyday.
I am still a Peanuts fan first and formost, but there are so many great strips out there and you can have them all in this wonderful world. Any fans of 'the outbursts of Evert True' here? |

One where Calvin complains at Susie's saying that something will "take light years." After explaining at great length that you can't use a unit of distance to measure time, Calvin takes a breath, and his mom yells "Keep it down in there...you kids are making a ton of noise!"

My favorite was the one where he answers the phone and orders a pizza and hangs up. As he walks from the phone he says, "I like to make everybody's day a little surreal" (or words to that effect)

Calvin and Hobbes are looking through the TV guide to decide on a movie to watch. Calvin finds one that contains "adult situations".
Calvin: What are "adult situations"? Hobbes: Oh, paying taxes, balancing the checkbook, that sort of thing. Calvin: Wow! I'm glad they warned us! Let's find something else! |
