Look at the "Kapps on Fire" Wallet which is a fire wallet combined with card in wallet. It is a convenient size to go in the trouser pocket.
When I first bought it I thought it was c**p (sorry Stephane) & put it into the drawer. Then I saw the R. Paul Wilson "Restaurant Act" Video (now DVD) in which he did a card to wallet routine using a "Long Card" as the guide. Out of the drawer came "Kapps on Fire" and I used the Long card instead of the original guide. It worked beautifully with his routine. Then the igniter broke off & more frustration. Finally fixed this with another lighter ignition system epoxed on and now I have a practical & reliable effect that I use all the time. |

Thanks for your inputs, I guess I was looking at the safety aspects of performing with the fire wallet in a public venue. I have a Kapps wallet and love it. BTW, where did you get your replacement ignition system?

Fire wallets are a tricky thing to use. If you use it in a dark restaurant, it will shock people & they may recoil & spill food or drink. In a well lit restaurant, It is a surprise, but not one that will cause an accident.

I used to use the Kaps On Fire wallet all of the time. I only used it for the fire wallet effect, not the card to wallet feature. I carried several packet tricks in it. I had mine modified for an electronic ignition. It doesn't work as well now. I rarely use it anymore. I guess I've moved from "look at this neat prop" to "experience this cool effect". The Kaps wallet isn't a bad fire wallet though. Bob

For Dano: Replacement ignition system.
I found a cheap cig. lighter in the form of a normal cigarette. I carefully dismantled it and cemented the flint holder & wheel to the wallet with an epoxy paste. This works better than the original. Hope this helps. |

I have a small date book fire wallet that I used to use working tables in various venues. I don't any more, at least in Chicago.
Reason? The Fire Marshall offered to haul my backside off to the Bastille, fine me a LOT of money and close the restaurant unless I stopped doing the routine right then and there, put the gimmick in my case and lock it in my car. Since Great White's problem in Rhode Island (club caught on fire and a bunch of people died as a result), Fire Marshalls all over the country are cracking down, big time on ANY pyrotechnical performances. In Chicago, you now have to put up a large (like $100,000) bond, have specific fire insurance out the wazoo and have at least two people standing by with fire extinquishers for any performance using fire or you risk jail time, a large fine and a really ticked off restaurant manager. And Ghu forbid that anything goes wrong and someone gets hurt or even ALMOST gets hurt! Lawyers froth at the mouth over things like that! Is it really worth that kind of risk? Not on my watch. Buy Your Mileage May Vary, obviously. Lee Darrow, C.H.

Part of magic, I think, is picking the right audiences for you, and thinking about the most appropriate tricks that would suit that particular crowd.

I work in a family restaurant. The fire wallet is the most requested trick besides "the ball trick".
Hmmmm...what does that say about my magic?....hmmmmmm I would do the fire wallet if the management does not object. |

You can't legally do fire in a public venue in Houston, Las Vegas, Chicago or Germany (according to Ted Lesley.) Considering how many places this encompasses, I think I would forget about it.
And the guys who do this as a gag when in line at banks, supermarkets and department stores -- well, just wait until you get hauled in by the security guards.

Or shot, Bill. Many of the "crack security troops manning the perimeter" at many banks are hardly what I would call much above Barney Fife from the old Andy of Mayberry show.
Others are off-duty cops who are completely no-nonsense and will deal with anyone flashing fire as a criminal assault. Not fun at all! Now, the rest of you folks, add in the idea that many banks now have sprinkler systems.. guess who gets to pay back the insurance coverage for the damages that would result from a fire wallet setting off the sprinkler system in a bank? Under the current rules of subrogation (the ability of an insurance company to recover a part or all of its costs that happened due to a "bad action" of someone), the offending party - the magician - gets to pay the insurance company for all of those lovely computers, documents, phone systems, security cameras and business machines in the bank that were ruined by the sprinklers coming on. Now add in all of the people there who got soaked in the process as well - laptop computers, cell phones, pagers, Palm Pilots, Gameboys, lunches, clothing and even medical costs - and the numbers become turly staggering! Nope! NOT worth it at all! To say nothing of what the Fire Marshalls will do to you and the personal injury lawyers of anyone who you might have scared with the thing. Remember torts assault in civil court is the BELIEF that one is about to be touched without consent! The use of fire in such a torts assault situation, I believe, would only aggravate the level and possibly also incur a criminal aspect to your case. Fire can be considered a weapon, after all. How would youu feel, folks, if someone you didn't know suddenly hd a handful of fire and was standing there grinning at you as you stood on line at a bank, theater or supermarket? Frankly, I'd feel pretty threatened! And that's the definition of a torts assualt (at least it was back when I took my one and only course in Business Law). Welcome to the post-9/11 world, folks. Doing a fire wallet in line at a bank is just simply foolish, dangerous and probably criminal. Don't do it. Lee Darrow, C.H.
